{"id":26476,"date":"2021-03-27T07:31:50","date_gmt":"2021-03-27T07:31:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=26476"},"modified":"2021-03-27T07:31:50","modified_gmt":"2021-03-27T07:31:50","slug":"shell-energy-broadband-scraps-controversial-switching-exit-fee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/03\/shell-energy-broadband-scraps-controversial-switching-exit-fee.html","title":{"rendered":"Shell Energy Broadband Scraps Controversial Switching Exit Fee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Energy provider and UK ISP <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/shellenergy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"shell energy\">Shell Energy<\/a> has announced that they will scrap the \u00a315 &#8220;<em>cease fee<\/em>&#8221; that was being charged to home broadband customers who wanted to switch away to a different provider, including those who were now outside their minimum contract term.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Technically speaking Shell, or any ISP for that matter, can charge a post-contract cease fee and the one mentioned above does in fact appear in their T&amp;C&#8217;s. In shells&#8217; case it&#8217;s apparently a hang over from when they gobbled First Utility&#8217;s broadband base some years back, and sometimes wholesale providers can also charge ISPs such a fee too (i.e. the provider is allowed to recover these from consumers).<\/p>\n<p>However, such fees should normally be made transparent to consumers at sign-up (i.e. not hidden in the small print). On top of that <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-133 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"ofcom\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\">Ofcom<\/a> generally takes a dim view of charges that could discourage switching (the modern preference is for such things to be recovered via the setup fee or monthly rental). As such very few ISPs will today charge a post-contract exit fee, but they were once quite common.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that pressure from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneysavingexpert.com\/news\/2021\/03\/shell-energy-broadband-remove-cease-fee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MSE<\/a> and <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-133 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"ofcom\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\">Ofcom<\/a> seems to have nudged <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/shellenergy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"shell energy\">Shell Energy<\/a> to have a change of heart, although the ISP has yet to clarify when they will stop charging the cease fee. In addition, those who have already been hit by it will not be refunded. Meanwhile, <strong>Early Termination Charges<\/strong> (ETC) will also continue to apply to those who exit before their existing contract has ended, which is normal.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>A Shell Energy Spokesperson said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The cease charge relates to a charge from our network partner which is passed through to customers.
