{"id":26479,"date":"2021-03-29T09:06:07","date_gmt":"2021-03-29T08:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=26479"},"modified":"2021-03-29T09:11:19","modified_gmt":"2021-03-29T08:11:19","slug":"future-oneweb-leo-broadband-satellites-may-adopt-laser-links","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/03\/future-oneweb-leo-broadband-satellites-may-adopt-laser-links.html","title":{"rendered":"Future OneWeb LEO Broadband Satellites May Adopt Laser Links"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK MD for Defence and Space at Airbus, Richard Franklin, has reportedly said that future ultrafast broadband satellites from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oneweb.world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OneWeb<\/a> could integrate lasers to help create an &#8220;<em>unjammable<\/em>&#8221; backstop for if a hostile country (e.g. Russia or China) were to ever launch attacks against our vulnerable undersea fibre optic cables.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>After last week&#8217;s launch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/oneweb\" target=\"_blank\">OneWeb<\/a> now has a total of 146 small <strong>Low Earth Orbit<\/strong> (LEO) platforms in space and the initial plan is to build a constellation of <strong>648 satellites<\/strong>, which is enough for a reasonable level of global coverage by around the end of 2022. After that they have future approval for a total of 2,000 satellites and 1,280 of those will be a second-generation model that sits in a higher <strong>Medium Earth Orbit<\/strong> (MEO) of 8,500km, but that would require much more investment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> The first initial commercial broadband services are due to go live across parts of the UK, Alaska, Canada, Northern Europe, Greenland, Iceland, and the Arctic seas in November 2021.<\/div>\n<p>In theory the new network could deliver ultrafast broadband speeds (<strong>100Mbps+<\/strong>) and latency times of under 40ms (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/07\/live-test-of-onewebs-leo-satellite-broadband-network-hits-400mbps.html\">example<\/a>), although we still have no idea what sort of service will actually be made available to the domestic connectivity market (via a third-party ISP as they don&#8217;t sell direct like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/starlink\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a>) and how much it might cost.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time there&#8217;s been a lot of talk about future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/oneweb\" target=\"_blank\">OneWeb<\/a> satellites (possibly the MEO generation) adding global navigation features to help complement the common GPS system, but that may not be the only enhancement to come with future platforms. The company&#8217;s manufacturing partner, <strong>Airbus<\/strong>, has also signalled to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisismoney.co.uk\/money\/markets\/article-9410041\/OneWebs-space-lasers-scheme-safeguard-broadband.html\">Mail on Sunday<\/a> that laser communications may be added (these are currently in early lab testing).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Richard Franklin, Airbus MD for Defence and Space, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a perceived vulnerability of the very high throughput fibre optic cables. How do you create a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">satellite<\/a> backbone that could in part create resilience for those? We see that happening through the use of lasers in space.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At present, it&#8217;s not clear whether this is a reference to laser links with ground stations or inter-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">satellite<\/a> lasers, or both of those in combination. SpaceX&#8217;s rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/starlink\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a> constellation has already adopted some inter-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">satellite<\/a> laser links, which can help to improve connection reliability, performance and coverage.<\/p>\n<p>Granted this approach could also improve the security of data transfer, although it&#8217;s worth remembering that any country brazen enough to disrupt the mass of undersea fibre optic links between countries (a move that would see retaliation), probably wouldn&#8217;t have too many qualms about disabling a rival country&#8217;s LEOs. Using missiles may be counter-productive due to the risk of run-away collisions, but anti-satellite lasers are also a thing.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Defence, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/oneweb\" target=\"_blank\">OneWeb<\/a> just announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with US Department of Defence satellite communications application specialist, TrustComm Inc. The partnership between OneWeb and TrustComm will enable Low Earth Orbit (LEO) delivered connectivity to government customers.
