{"id":27012,"date":"2021-05-31T00:01:32","date_gmt":"2021-05-30T23:01:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=27012"},"modified":"2024-02-23T15:28:12","modified_gmt":"2024-02-23T15:28:12","slug":"avm-talks-broadband-routers-in-a-time-of-chip-shortages-and-covid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/05\/avm-talks-broadband-routers-in-a-time-of-chip-shortages-and-covid.html","title":{"rendered":"AVM Talks Broadband Routers in a Time of Chip Shortages and COVID"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a new interview <a href=\"https:\/\/en.avm.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AVM<\/a>, which is a well-known German manufacturer of home networking products (e.g. FRITZ!Box broadband routers for UK ISPs), has spoken to ISPreview.co.uk about how they&#8217;re responding to some of the year&#8217;s biggest challenges &#8211; from COVID-19 to 6GHz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> and a global shortage of semiconductor chips etc.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>AVM was founded during 1986 in Berlin (Germany) and has been busy growing its influence ever since. The company now claims to be one of the top two manufacturers of broadband devices in Europe and holds an impressive market share in their home country. A number of UK ISPs, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/zen_internet\" target=\"_blank\">Zen Internet<\/a>, have also adopted their routers after the manufacturer became popular with enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p>However, the past few months have also been some of the most turbulent in living memory for the tech sector, which has struggled with COVID-19, a shortage of semiconductor chips, issues caused by the post-Brexit UK EU trade agreement and the introduction of new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> technology.<\/p>\n<p>Suffice to say, we were curious to know how AVM were coping with all of these challenges, as well as how they perceived the future direction of consumer router technology. Thankfully, the company&#8217;s UK Sales Manager, <strong>Matthew Tyler<\/strong>, was happy to help answer the myriad of questions that we threw his way.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>The Interview<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>1. At a time when router manufacturers, including AVM, are already starting to ship devices that can cope with multi-gigabit Wi-Fi speeds via the latest 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) standard, why is it that the physical LAN port on the back of so many broadband routers has remained hobbled to just 1Gbps on almost every model we see?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The situation is starting to become increasingly relevant as more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> broadband ISPs are beginning to launch 2Gbps, 3Gbps and even 10Gbps packages in the consumer space. It\u2019s not like faster Ethernet LAN standards than 1Gbps haven\u2019t been around for a long time already.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><u>ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>With the welcomed growth in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> infrastructure, and the challenges we\u2019ve all been facing with working from home, the importance of the home gateway has never been greater than today. The competitive router market still requires careful calculations of cost and performance.<\/p>\n<p>We began Q1 2020 by announcing our roadmap for Fiber and Wi-Fi 6 routers with the launch of our FRITZ!Box 6660 with an integrated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/docsis\">DOCSIS<\/a> (Data Over Cable Services Interface Specification) 3.1 cable modem. Since then we have been working on other new Wi-Fi 6 routers: 7530 AX, 5530 AX, and with a few delays the 7590 AX, currently in modest volumes to the German market only.<\/p>\n<p>These will be followed later this year by the 4060, 5590, 6690 market launches \u2013 all are high-end Wi-Fi 6 multi-gigabit LAN\/WAN routers &#8211; and the Mesh Wi-Fi FRITZ!Repeater 6000. All of these routers have a platform with a 2.5 Gbs WAN\/LAN port and up to four additional 1 Gbs LAN ports, with powerful processors and memory for allocating multi-gibabit bandwidth throughout the home network.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve had a few delays with the rollout this year but with in-house ingenuity and the years-long partnerships with our suppliers and manufacturing partners, we\u2019re managing to keep pace with our game plan.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>2. Speaking of 802.11ax and multi-Gigabit speeds, a number of countries like the UK and USA have approved the 6GHz band for use in Wi-Fi networks (Wi-Fi 6E). What sort of extra challenges and considerations do you have to make when introducing an entirely new band like this into your hardware, given that for many years you\u2019ve only had to design new kit for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands? Plus, when might we actually see a 6GHz router from AVM?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><u>ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s very exciting for us to see the allocation of the 6GHz band, the first new band since the introduction of 5GHz (11ac) nearly ten years ago.<\/p>\n<p>AVM has been developing Wi-Fi hardware for a number of years and the next stages are eagerly anticipated, to an already well established branch of our engineering department.<\/p>\n<p>We have had strong in-house radio competency for quite a long time. We started with Bluetooth, and soon added DECT, Wi-Fi 2.4, and Wi-Fi 5 Ghz integration. Yes, switching to 6Ghz means different antennas, different test-devices and different interference, but we have a number of talented people working in our HF-department, all eager to apply the broader spectrum to our Wi-Fi routers.<\/p>\n<p>An extra challenge will be for our marketing team to help distinguish the meaning of Wi-Fi 6 (11ax) and Wi-Fi 6E (inclusion of 6 GHz band, in addition to 2.4 and 5 GHz).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>3. While we\u2019re on the topic of Wi-Fi, perhaps you can help to settle a debate. We see a lot of routers with external screw-in wireless antennas (often several of them stick out the back &#8211; with adjustability), and others that stick to internal solutions. The assumption is often that external screw-in antennas should be better for coverage and performance in the home, but in our experience, this isn\u2019t always the case.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Often it can be very hard to perceive much difference between the two methods, but equally we don\u2019t have a true like-for-like platform to test with. AVM tends to make them internal, so what are your thoughts on this and have you conducted any studies to support the design decisions here?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><u>ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Over the years, there have been many iterations of design to optimise the internal antenna layout respective to the specific Wi-Fi chipset. Besides the widely accepted aesthetic appeal of a cleaner router design, the omnidirectional character of internal antennas is better suited for residential in-house coverage.<\/p>\n<p>The overwhelming majority of customers want a simple Wi-Fi set up, and internal antennas (up to 12 antenna on a triband 4&#215;4 Wi-Fi router\/extender) have the advantage of not needing any attention or manual alignment, and have the added advantage of not breaking off, hanging loose or going lost.<\/p>\n<p>The hard-featured external antennas can be helpful for focusing the Wi-Fi beam to a specific client\u2019s direction. This is usually unnecessary for residential environments.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>4. When it comes to broadband routers, one of the hottest debates of recent times has tended to centre on the issue of firmware updates, particularly for security purposes (patching vulnerabilities etc.). Sadly, some manufacturers tend to release a new model, put out one or two firmware releases, and then completely forget about the device. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What sort of approach does AVM take when it comes to tackling vulnerabilities and adding features via firmware to older routers. And how long (in years) do you think is right for a router manufacturer in the consumer space to continue providing updates?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><u>ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>We strive to maximise the service life of our routers. Fresh firmware updates make ownership so much more fun, secure, and lends reassurance when reaching for this brand again in the future. It is our commitment to support these products as long as we can.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes that might not be possible due to external constrains (for example, when a chipset is no longer supported or the manufacturer of that chipset no longer exists), but our goal is to deliver software with new features and bugfixes for as many years as possible. You can see that we often continue to update the software long after production of the model has been discontinued.<\/p>\n<p>For example, FRITZ!Box 7490 was launched in 2013 and we will be releasing the new FRITZ!OS in the next few weeks.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Flick over to page 2 to continue this interview.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. At the end of last year AVM launched the new FRITZ!Box 5530 &#8220;<em>Fiber<\/em>&#8221; router, which seemed specifically tailored to work with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> providers. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>One particularly interesting aspect of this device is that it integrates an Optical Network Terminal (fibre optic modem), which can even be changed via the use of a Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) port.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the UK every FTTP provider will generally install a wall-hung ONT unit and then give consumers a separate broadband router to connected into that. What are the advantages of integrating the ONT into a router and do you see FTTP providers in the UK adopting the SFP approach, either now or in the future (at the time of writing we couldn&#8217;t find a UK version of the 5530 for sale)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><u>ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>FTTP is available from many networking operators. For some, the integration of the fiber modem\/ONT is a cost-efficient option, or this can be upgraded by customers optionally with FTTP as a \u2018wires only\u2019 service as they would in the past for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> services.<\/p>\n<p>Because the 5530 is BBF.247 XGS-PON and GPON Certified, the network operator can be assured it is compliant with their network. Alongside Wi-Fi 6, this router is fitted with a 2.5Gbit\/s WAN\/LAN port for internet access over both scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>The SFP slot can accommodate different GPON and P2P Fiber connections and the router autosenses the network to assure the correct module is installed. Other advantages of ONT integration is direct analysis and data of the optical connection.<\/p>\n<p>We have always found advantages in integration of layer one into the router. This reduces clutter, energy consumption and allows for a better diagnostic capability. It is more complicated to support a system that connects different components for access to the network. A FRITZ!Box allows full diagnostic and overview of the configuration of the access line.<\/p>\n<p>In many cases the location of the optical network termination is not optimal for the wireless access point, which is why we integrate Mesh networking into our other networking products, allowing the transportation of all features of a FRITZ!Box through different connection types to any place in the house you need, using LAN bridging and Powerline technologies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>6. One of the biggest changes in the UK during 2021 has been the end of the Brexit transition period and the signing of a new trade deal with the EU. Not to mention the added crisis caused by COVID-19. Have these two issues had any impact upon your business in the UK and are there areas where the new EU-UK trade agreement could be improved to help?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><u>ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>We supply ISPs and retail markets world-wide, and after the initial shock on 1st January 2021, imports from the EU and Brexit have not posed any major challenges. Our distribution partner Euroroute has expanded its logistics with new routes and hubs to the UK to guarantee our customers a steady supply and quick lead times. There have been other major distractions to the supply chain due to COVID-19 and the global chip crisis which are keeping things tense. We see this relaxing later in Q4 with increasing additional supply of the new Wi-Fi 6 products.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>7. AVM is typically a firm that hails from Germany, but what sort of changes (if any) \u2013 technical, regulation or otherwise &#8211; do you have to make to a broadband router before bringing it to market in the UK?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><u>ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Besides the UK power supply plugs, filter, and cables, no additional localisations are needed to the standard EU product, and most of the previous EU regulations are still in place or exchanged by identical regulations. AVM has a dedicated department to handle international certifications. We are compliant with the UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) and will add these markings in addition to CE markings for the UK market in the future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>8. Given the move to FTTP networks and VoIP in many countries, do you think all consumer broadband routers should now be shipped with a built-in Analogue Terminal Adapter (ATA) &#8211; to support old handsets &#8211; and associated FXO \/ FXS ports as standard?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><u>ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Absolutely, all routers should have connectivity for handsets or phones. The old PSTN \u2018landline\u2019 network will soon be retired for all services (also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>), as has happened throughout the EU already. The ubiquitous residential landline has been merely converted to an All-IP telephony service. The telephone service provisioning is completely transparent to the end-user. This is a much more flexible and feature-rich experience for the home phone. End-to-end HD audio on calls is something I don\u2019t want to miss again.<\/p>\n<p>All of our FRITZ!Boxes also have DECT onboard for registering up to 6 cordless handsets and DECT ULE (ultra low energy) for Smart Home applications. Customers with existing cordless or analogue telephones can simply connect these directly to the FRITZ!Box \u2018FON\u2019 port. The existing analogue telephone is familiar and requires no learning curve for the residential customer to use.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>9. What, in your view, are the top five new features that you expect router manufactures to be adding over the next few years and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><u>ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Choosing the right development path and product build is one of the greatest challenges manufacturers face.<\/p>\n<p>So, here they are, the top new features to watch for:<\/p>\n<p>1. For the UK provider market, it\u2019s clear that the aforementioned Wi-Fi 6 will be standard on all new routers, and we\u2019ll see router upgrades to 4&#215;4 triband routers and repeaters with 2.5 Gbs WAN\/LAN ports available for extended range and higher throughput demands. A requirement in 2022 for 10Gbs ports in residential home routers remains to be seen, but clearly this is the direction over the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>2. The development path to support the new Wif6E standard for the pristine 6GHz band is also prepared for when the market is ready and more Wifi6E devices appear in the market.<\/p>\n<p>3. Demand for residential voice services, especially for FTTP customers, makes integrated Voice and DECT mandatory features. Not new for us, but new for a lot of other manufactures.<\/p>\n<p>4. Network operators offering wires-only FTTP services will create markets for routers with an SFP slot to integrate optical network termination module (GPON, XGS-PON, P2P) in one box.<\/p>\n<p>5. The home router will play a central role for the Smart Home, a convenient existing resource available to smart products without the need for adding hubs or bridges using Wi-Fi, DECT ULE and cloud-based interfaces. I expect manufactures will focus on more interoperability with existing home networking technologies for new opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>6. Another major technological development is in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a>, with latency and bandwidth to compete with today\u2019s fixed access speeds, this is a commercially viable alternative for primary home access for certain markets.<\/p>\n<p>7. A big new feature will be USP (User Services Platform also referred to as TR-369) for enhanced Wi-Fi and CPE WAN management for the service provider. USP\/TR369 (CPE WAN management for ISPs) is optimized for realtime diagnostics to improve the customer care experience, especially with regards to Wi-Fi Mesh and CPE management. USP is an open protocol industry standard that receives continuous development. With USP (User Services Platform) the service provider can obtain more information about the home enviroment of his customers to give optimal customer care for positioning Wi-Fi routers and repeaters.<\/p>\n<p>8. Anything I left out here will be added in the comments below.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>10. Finally, AVM recently released their big FRITZ!OS 7.25 update for existing routers. But, looking further ahead, what sort of changes are you planning for future releases, such as v8?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><u>ANSWER:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Thes next firmware update will include new features such as:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Easy to enable prioritization of a computer for internet access<br \/>\n&#8211; FRITZ!Fon start screen options: weather forecast, nightlight, events<br \/>\n&#8211; FRITZ! Smart Home now supports DECT compatible roller shutters<br \/>\n&#8211; Smart Home: Lightsequence &#8220;Wakeup\/Sleep&#8221; for FRITZ!DECT 500 and compatible DECT LEDs<br \/>\n&#8211; Smart Home: TOP &#8211; Perfect indoor climate with FRITZ!DECT 440 &#8211; humidity information at a glance<br \/>\n&#8211; For FRITZ!Box&#8217;s integrated fax machine: Log of received and sent faxes<br \/>\n&#8211; Telefony: TOP \u2013 improving UI for using the telephone book, call diversion and call blocks<\/p>\n<p>Looking further, we are also working how make the switch from an existing installation to a new FRITZ!Box as simple as possible.
