{"id":27025,"date":"2021-05-14T11:22:16","date_gmt":"2021-05-14T10:22:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=27025"},"modified":"2021-05-14T11:22:16","modified_gmt":"2021-05-14T10:22:16","slug":"businesses-unprepared-for-end-of-openreachs-copper-phone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/05\/businesses-unprepared-for-end-of-openreachs-copper-phone.html","title":{"rendered":"Businesses Unprepared for End of Openreach&#8217;s Copper Phone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new survey of 400 UK-based SME businesses, which was conducted by ISP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spitfire.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spitfire<\/a> during March 2021, has found that nearly half (46%) of firms have no idea that their existing analogue phone and ISDN services will be switched-off completely by December 2025.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;<em>Switch On to the Switch Off<\/em>&#8221; survey also highlighted that 83% of businesses have no visibility of when their services will be switched off, and over three quarters (77%) haven\u2019t prepared for the disruption the switch-off of services may cause.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> has already begun the gradual migration of traditional voice (PSTN \/ POTS) services to all-IP (VoIP, Cloud PBX etc.) technologies (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/05\/openreach-list-next-77-uk-areas-for-copper-phone-to-fibre-switch.html\">here<\/a>), which is due to complete by December 2025 and is occurring on copper lines (e.g. SOGEA). In other words, future phone services will need to connect over your broadband service (via a router etc.) instead of a handset plugging directly into the old wall socket.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, most people switching from copper to <strong>Fibre-to-the-Premises<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) broadband lines will also need to adopt digital voice style services. Admittedly, some people are still using transition products that mix analogue phone lines with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> lines, but the copper side of that will eventually also need to make the transition.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Dominic Norton, Director of Spitfire Network Services, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you consider that the services businesses rely on to ensure they can serve their customers will be gradually switched off between now and 2025, the lack of preparedness has surprised us. Now is the time to take action because the future of your business depends on it.<\/p>\n<p>To facilitate the analogue network and ISDN switch off, newer technologies are being more widely adopted. For those using an analogue or ISDN telephone number service, they will need to move to Voice over IP and take a SIP service. This could be a Cloud PBX for example or fibre Ethernet for larger offices.<\/p>\n<p>The impact on telephony and broadband services is far reaching so you need to know how it will impact you.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> and various ISPs are currently in the process of trying to raise awareness about the switch so that both homes and businesses are aware of how things will change. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> has also launched the semi-related &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openreach.com\/call-waiting-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Call Waiting List<\/a><\/strong>&#8221; campaign (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/04\/openreach-campaign-to-raise-awareness-of-analogue-uk-phone-retirement.html\">here<\/a>) and added new sections to their website (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.openreach.co.uk\/cpportal\/products\/product-withdrawal\/stop-sells-updates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Stop Sells Page<\/strong><\/a>) to help.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the survey itself, we should highlight that not every provider uses Openreach&#8217;s network, and it&#8217;s thus unclear how many of those respondents might be at risk of confusion because they&#8217;re already on an IP based phone solution from a different network (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new survey of 400 UK-based SME businesses, which was conducted by ISP Spitfire during March 2021, has found that nearly half (46%) of firms have no idea that their existing analogue phone and ISDN services will be switched-off completely by December 2025.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":25154,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[69,34,81],"class_list":["post-27025","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-bt-openreach","tag-statistics","tag-voip"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 -
