Hull-based UK broadband ISP KCOM<\/a>, which was gobbled up by Macquarie Infrastructure for \u00a3627m in 2019 (here<\/a>), appears to have sold their off-net Eclipse Internet base to the Global 4 Group<\/a> for an undisclosed sum. By the looks of it the provider will now make a return under the Eclipse Broadband<\/a> name.<\/p>\n

Eclipse used to be quite a popular UK provider of broadband, phone and other network services, at least it was until 2004 when the Hull-focused KCOM<\/a> Group gobbled it up for \u00a312.5m, seemingly as part of an ineffective attempt to expand outside their incumbent patch in East Yorkshire. After that the brand slowly receded from the mainstream view, although a fair few customers remained.<\/p>\n

However, a report from last year indicated that Macquarie intended to carve up the KCOM<\/a> business in order to focus on its core network and fibre expansion (here<\/a>). KCOM is currently in the process of investing \u00a3100m to build their Fibre-to-the-Premises<\/strong> (FTTP<\/a>) broadband network across more of East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.<\/p>\n

Customers on the old Eclipse Internet base have now informed ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve received the following communication from KCOM, which states that they’ve been sold to the Global 4 Group. The operator has also confirmed this.<\/p>\n

KCOM’s Email to Eclipse Customers<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We are writing to let you know about exciting changes happening here at Eclipse.<\/p>\n

Currently you are invoiced by Eclipse, part of the KCOM group of companies who provide and support your services. There have been some changes behind the scenes and your contract and services will now be delivered by Eclipse Broadband Ltd, part of the Global 4 Group.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The acquisition will no doubt add to the Global 4 Group’s other residential brands, which include names like Fleur Telecom, Home Telecom and Weekly Broadband.<\/p>\n

Nigel Barnett, Global 4 CEO, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“To acquire this prestigious customer base has been a long time in the making and, after our purchase of Fleur Telecom from the DWS group in January 2020, complements our standing in the marketplace. Further expansion is planned over the coming year. Rollout of FTTP<\/a> across the UK has our main attention.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Dale Raneberg, KCOM CEO, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“We\u2019re delighted to be part of this new partnership with the Global 4 Group. We look forward to building on an already successful relationship based on the expertise of Global 4 in the residential market and KCOM as one of the country\u2019s leading infrastructure providers.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

KCOM states that Eclipse’s services will continue as KCOM Group Ltd for a short period (related products will also continue to be provided over KCOM’s infrastructure), but will then transfer to Eclipse Broadband “within the next few months<\/em>.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
