{"id":2758,"date":"2013-02-26T13:06:10","date_gmt":"2013-02-26T13:06:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=2758"},"modified":"2013-02-26T13:06:44","modified_gmt":"2013-02-26T13:06:44","slug":"16-london-uk-boroughs-preparing-to-launch-free-wifi-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/02\/16-london-uk-boroughs-preparing-to-launch-free-wifi-service.html","title":{"rendered":"16 London UK Boroughs Preparing to Launch FREE WiFi Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several major UK telecoms operators are reported to be bidding on contracts that will see 16 out of London&#8217;s 33 boroughs all deploying a new <strong>free wireless internet<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">wifi<\/a>) service to local residents and visitors, which could also be used to help ease the strain on Mobile Broadband operators.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.v3.co.uk\/v3-uk\/news\/2250456\/exclusive-london-boroughs-in-talks-to-provide-free-wifi-to-residents\" target=\"_blank\">V3<\/a>, the new network would make use of <strong>small cells<\/strong> and <strong>street furniture<\/strong> (lamp posts and bus shelters etc.) to distribute its service. But locals would probably only gain access to the free connectivity for around 30 minutes a day and after that they&#8217;d most likely need to pay a small fee.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Geoff Connell, IT Director for Newham Council, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>The boroughs are jointly tendering for Wi-Fi. What we&#8217;ve done is invite telcos to piggy-back on our infrastructure to provide free Wi-Fi to residents. A number of telcos have bid. It&#8217;s the same sort of model as that which is running in the [London] underground. [The Wi-Fi provider] will generate income through advertising<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Camden Council is understood to be leading the tendering process and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a>, which already runs a similar network in the boroughs of Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea, are believed to have a strong interest.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly we wouldn&#8217;t be at all surprised to see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> and BSkyB (The Cloud) showing an active interest as they all have significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">wifi<\/a> hotspot networks.
