{"id":2792,"date":"2013-03-04T08:31:38","date_gmt":"2013-03-04T08:31:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=2792"},"modified":"2013-03-04T09:51:04","modified_gmt":"2013-03-04T09:51:04","slug":"railway-bridge-hampers-1gbps-fibre-broadband-rollout-in-lancashire-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/03\/railway-bridge-hampers-1gbps-fibre-broadband-rollout-in-lancashire-uk.html","title":{"rendered":"Railway Dispute Hampers 1Gbps Fibre Broadband Rollout in Lancashire UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0debate over costs between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/b4rn\" target=\"_blank\">B4RN<\/a> (Broadband 4 Rural North), which wants to run its &#8220;<em>hyperfast<\/em>&#8221; 1000Mbps (Megabits) capable fibre optic broadband (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a>) cable over a railway bridge (viaduct) that crosses the <strong>River Lune<\/strong> in North Lancashire (England), and the state-owned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.networkrail.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Network Rail<\/a> is threatening to delay the project.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The approximately 3 mile long fibre run (though it&#8217;s just 150 metres over the railway segment), which would help to connect <strong>Arkholme<\/strong> with its next core link in neighbouring <strong>Wennington<\/strong> across the river, is a vital part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/b4rn\" target=\"_blank\">B4RN<\/a>&#8217;s <strong>phase one route<\/strong> at the top of their initial network map. But Network Rail, which maintains and develops Britain&#8217;s national rail network, perhaps understandably &#8220;<em>wants a lot of money and a huge amount of regulation and red tape<\/em>&#8221; in exchange for use of the bridge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/b4rn\" target=\"_blank\">B4RN<\/a>, which is a community-owned and not-for-profit organisation, admits that &#8220;<em>commercial considerations and health and safety regulations have to apply in these kinds of situations<\/em>&#8220;. It has also attempted, so far without much success, to reach a <strong>mutually beneficial arrangement<\/strong> with Network Rail (e.g. giving them access to B4RN\u2019s network for its own purposes). Efforts to resolve the \u201c<em>major snag<\/em>\u201d are continuing but B4RN does have an alternative.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Christine Conder of B4RN said (<a href=\"http:\/\/b4rbuk.wordpress.com\" target=\"_blank\">blog<\/a>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>A directional drill under the river is the only other way across, and it seems so daft with a great bridge there and very few trains using it these days. There is no connectivity on that line &#8230; we could maybe do some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">wifi<\/a> for them or something? or even put some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3g<\/a> transmitters along the route? Who knows what the future holds.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>With a partner like them we could help each other become digitally enhanced. We still have steam trains on this route as the nearest station is probably Carnforth. Steam and fibre. What a combo<\/em>!&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It should be said that work on the network hasn&#8217;t completely ground to a halt because B4RN can still shift its resources and continue the development on other parts of their infrastructure in the rural Lune Valley region.
