{"id":2806,"date":"2013-03-05T13:41:43","date_gmt":"2013-03-05T13:41:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=2806"},"modified":"2013-03-08T12:31:41","modified_gmt":"2013-03-08T12:31:41","slug":"virgin-mobile-uk-cap-3g-contract-and-payg-internet-speeds-at-2mbps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/03\/virgin-mobile-uk-cap-3g-contract-and-payg-internet-speeds-at-2mbps.html","title":{"rendered":"UPD2 Virgin Mobile UK Cap 3G Contract and PAYG Data Speeds at 2Mbps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Angry <a href=\"http:\/\/www.virginmobile.com\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Mobile<\/a> customers with a pay-as-you-go or contract deal have been\u00a0told that their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> internet data download speeds are being restricted to a <strong>maximum of just 2Mbps<\/strong> (Megabits per second), which comes\u00a0as part of a &#8220;<em>trial<\/em>&#8221; to help improve the networks performance amidst increasing congestion.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Data is an expensive commodity for mobile networks and last year\u2019s introduction of a new &#8220;<em>truly unlimited<\/em>&#8221; tariff that allowed Virgin Mobile customers to &#8220;<em>talk, text and browse online as much as you like<\/em>&#8221; can&#8217;t be helping matters.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Krystal Evans, Virgin Mobile Support, explained:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>I&#8217;ve received confirmation that we&#8217;re trialing a speed cap which has been in place since mid-Feb and is applicable to Contract and PAYG customers, but excludes Mobile Broadband [ISPr ED: They mean the dedicated Mobile Broadband packages with USB Modems].<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The current cap is 2Mb\/s download, 0.5Mb\/s upload. We are doing this to ensure we can offer a good level of service to all customers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As this is still in trial we are actively monitoring customer feedback to determine its success as we believe this is vital in ensuring we&#8217;re delivering the best experience for our customers<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2013\/03\/05\/virgin_choking\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Register<\/a> notes a <a href=\"http:\/\/community.virginmedia.com\/t5\/Mobile\/Data-speeds\/td-p\/1711396\" target=\"_blank\">forum topic<\/a> where Virgin Mobile&#8217;s customers appear to be distinctly less than happy about the development, although other mobile operators have had to introduce similar restrictions in order to keep usage levels under control.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth pointing out that Virgin Mobile is a virtual operator that makes use of T-Mobile&#8217;s (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a>\u00a0network in order to run its own service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 7th March 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A new update from Virgin Mobile suggests that some customers are also suffering from a seemingly unrelated bout of &#8220;<em>unreliable\/slow internet connection<\/em>&#8220;. As a result the operator has &#8220;<em>asked our network partner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> to investigate the issue urgently<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 8th March 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Virgin Mobile now claims that &#8220;<em>our network partner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> have removed certain network controls to see whether this can help to pinpoint the issue. This has included temporarily removing the speed cap,<\/em>&#8221; which is being done partly to see if the recent connectivity problems were related to its introduction. As a result some customers are already reporting a big improvement in performance and reliability.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile others claim that the cap was switched off and then appeared to be switched back on again.
