{"id":28402,"date":"2021-09-09T10:23:48","date_gmt":"2021-09-09T09:23:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=28402"},"modified":"2021-09-09T10:24:23","modified_gmt":"2021-09-09T09:24:23","slug":"another-u-turn-as-three-uk-reintroduce-eu-roaming-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/09\/another-u-turn-as-three-uk-reintroduce-eu-roaming-charges.html","title":{"rendered":"Another U Turn as Three UK Reintroduce EU Roaming Charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mobile operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a>, which last year said that they planned to &#8220;<em>retain<\/em>&#8221; EU roaming at no extra cost &#8220;<em>regardless of Brexit negotiations<\/em>&#8220;, has today followed the U-turns from rivals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> by announcing their intention to reintroduce roaming charges on texts, data (mobile broadband) and calls.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Previously, customers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> were largely free to use their domestic UK allowances (calls, texts and data), at no extra cost, when roaming around the EU. Take note that, even under the so-called &#8220;<em>free<\/em>&#8221; roaming rules, a <strong>Fair Usage Policy<\/strong> (FUP) with data caps will usually still apply in order to prevent abuse (i.e. this is largely because not all EU countries offer unlimited data allowances on their domestic plans).<\/p>\n<p>Three actually tweaked their own FUP via their Go Roam policy in the EU back in July (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/06\/o2-vodafone-and-three-uk-respond-to-eu-roaming-concerns.html\">here<\/a>), which brought it in to line with their Go Roam Around the World fair use policy. This meant that, from July 1st, their fair use limit for data while in the EU was reduced from 20GB per month to 12GB.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly though, EU roaming users on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a>&#8217;s Pay Monthly plans will soon face additional charges.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Three UK&#8217;s Statement on Roaming<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From 23 May 2022 customers who have taken out a new contract or upgraded with Three from 1 October 2021 will pay a charge of \u00a32 per day when roaming within the EU and \u00a35 a day when roaming outside the EU. Pay as you go customers and customers who have taken out a contract before 1 October 2021 are unaffected by these changes. Customers roaming in the Republic of Ireland are also unaffected.<\/p>\n<p>We know that Go Roam has always been important to our customers and we had hoped to retain this benefit, but unfortunately there are now too many unknowns, which has made it commercially unviable for us to continue. This includes variations to the underlying cost of roaming, meaning we now have no visibility over the maximum amount it will cost us to provide a service for our customers to use their phone while abroad.<\/p>\n<p>We want to keep our roaming pricing as simple and affordable for customers as possible, and we think a flat charge of \u00a32 in the EU and \u00a35 outside the EU reflects this. It also means only those who roam will pay for the service, rather than customers who stay in the UK also absorbing this cost.<\/p>\n<p>We are investing billions of pounds in improving our network and infrastructure and already offer some of the most cost-effective deals on the market \u2013 implementing a separate roaming fee will enable us to continue to do this.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After all this, it will be very hard for many UK consumers to put their trust in any public commitments that mobile operators sometimes make. We should add that the Government does now require operators to introduce some limited protection against the risk of future EU roaming BILL SHOCKs, primarily by adding a legislated cap of \u00a345 on roaming charges and related warnings (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/09\/government-to-protect-free-eu-mobile-roaming-regardless-of-brexit.html\">first proposed in 2018<\/a>), although they haven&#8217;t forced operators to retain free roaming.<\/p>\n<p>The reality is that the recent <strong>EU-UK Trade Agreement<\/strong> didn\u2019t guarantee free EU roaming for the future (EU policy), but it did contain vague &#8220;<em>measures to encourage cooperation on the promotion of fair and transparent rates for international mobile roaming services in ways that can help promote the growth of trade among the Parties and enhance consumer welfare.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mobile operator Three UK, which last year said that they planned to &#8220;retain&#8221; EU roaming at no extra cost &#8220;regardless of Brexit negotiations&#8220;, has today followed the U-turns from rivals EE (BT) and Vodafone by announcing their intention to reintroduce roaming charges on texts, data (mobile broadband) and calls.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":23151,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[62,61,406,405,60,63,96],"class_list":["post-28402","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-3g","tag-4g","tag-5g","tag-ee","tag-mobile-broadband","tag-three-uk","tag-vodafone"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.3 -
