{"id":2869,"date":"2013-03-13T14:23:13","date_gmt":"2013-03-13T14:23:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=2869"},"modified":"2013-03-13T14:23:13","modified_gmt":"2013-03-13T14:23:13","slug":"point-topic-claims-demand-for-1gbps-fibre-broadband-is-low","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/03\/point-topic-claims-demand-for-1gbps-fibre-broadband-is-low.html","title":{"rendered":"Point Topic Claim Residential Demand for 1Gbps Fibre Broadband is Low"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new study from telecoms analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/pointtopic\" target=\"_blank\">Point Topic<\/a> UK has suggested that there is a ceiling to the broadband speeds that residential consumers are prepared to pay for, with <strong>hybrid-fibre<\/strong> (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>, FTTN) solutions tending to dominate the &#8220;<em>superfast<\/em>&#8221; market and demand for &#8220;<em>bandwidths of a gigabit<\/em>&#8221; being &#8220;<em>relatively low<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The research claims that consumers have started to see the point of superfast speeds from their ISP, albeit only up to internet download speeds of around<strong> 60-70Mbps<\/strong> (Megabits per second). This performance, claims the analyst, is enough to &#8220;<em>stream a high definition video or three with perhaps some light browsing on the side<\/em>&#8221; (i.e. ideal for a modern family). But apparently people rarely see much need for anything more.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" alt=\"global domestic fibre optic broadband speeds 2010 to 2012\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2013-internet-statistics\/global_domestic_fibre_optic_broadband_speeds_2010_to_2012.gif\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Similarly the analyst notes that, in terms of modern internet applications (e.g. video streaming), there is currently &#8220;<em>nothing that threatens to add up to much more than 40 to 50Mbps particularly over any significant time period<\/em>&#8220;. It adds that there are still relatively <strong>few households that will use even 20Mbps<\/strong> &#8220;<em>for more than a few seconds or at most minutes at a time<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/pointtopic\" target=\"_blank\">Point Topic<\/a> does admit that there are already some ISPs making a success of even faster speeds (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/b4rn\" target=\"_blank\">B4RN<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/hyperopticfibre\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Hyperoptic<\/a>) and in &#8220;<em>ten years time<\/em>&#8221; the situation could be very different.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Oliver Johnson, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/pointtopic\" target=\"_blank\">Point Topic<\/a>, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Consumers are making a decision when they sign up to an operators service that will usually be with them for at least a year and often two. If you are offered more bandwidth then fine but if it comes at a higher cost then a more complex value judgement takes place.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Suppliers can satisfy most of their customers and still keep their capital expenditure under control. Fiber to the node is a more realistic option at the moment since it provides enough of an bandwidth upgrade to satisfy demand as well as being a stepping stone for future deployments. It\u2019s a half way house that both suppliers and customers can accept and afford<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The study does however recognise that &#8220;<em>the most persuasive argument<\/em>&#8221; for rolling out a true fibre optic (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> etc.) service now is &#8220;<em>future proofing<\/em>&#8221; and it warns that operators adopting a hybrid approach may have to &#8220;<em>come back for another deployment round in five to seven years<\/em>&#8220;. At that time some of the smaller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a> ISPs could also be &#8220;<em>swept up by the market leaders<\/em>&#8221; (taken over).<\/p>\n<p>As a side note it&#8217;s also worth remembering that hybrid-fibre solutions, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> service, don&#8217;t deliver superfast broadband (25-30Mbps+) speeds to everybody and many lines could receive well below that level of performance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new study from telecoms analyst Point Topic UK has suggested that there is a ceiling to the broadband speeds that residential consumers are prepared to pay for, with hybrid-fibre (e.g. FTTC, FTTN) solutions tending to dominate the &#8220;superfast&#8221; market and demand for &#8220;bandwidths of a gigabit&#8221; being &#8220;relatively low&#8220;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[52,55,65,56,39,34],"class_list":["post-2869","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-fibre-optic","tag-fttc","tag-ftth","tag-fttp","tag-point-topic","tag-statistics"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.1 -
