{"id":2876,"date":"2013-03-14T08:10:17","date_gmt":"2013-03-14T08:10:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=2876"},"modified":"2013-03-14T08:10:17","modified_gmt":"2013-03-14T08:10:17","slug":"london-uk-councils-fear-pedestrian-harm-from-broadband-infrastructure-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/03\/london-uk-councils-fear-pedestrian-harm-from-broadband-infrastructure-bill.html","title":{"rendered":"London UK Councils Fear Pedestrian Harm from Broadband Infrastructure Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>London&#8217;s 33 local authorities have today warned that the UK government&#8217;s new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/10\/broadband-rollout-boosted-as-new-infrastructure-bill-reaches-uk-parliament.html\" target=\"_blank\">Growth and Infrastructure Bill<\/a>, which is designed boost the roll-out of faster broadband ISP services by <strong>cutting red tape<\/strong> in the <strong>planning system<\/strong>, could pass additional costs onto city boroughs and &#8220;<em>endanger road users<\/em>&#8221; by obstructing pedestrian walkways and reducing sightlines.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.londoncouncils.gov.uk\/default.htm\" target=\"_blank\">London Councils<\/a>, which represents the capital&#8217;s many local authorities and claims to support the publicly and privately funded roll-out <strong>superfast broadband<\/strong> (<em>25Mbps+<\/em>) to 90% of people by 2015, fears that the new bill will make it even easier for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> and other telecoms related companies to &#8220;<em>bypass community decision-making and install new [street cabinets]<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Cllr Chris Roberts, London Councils Executive Member for Planning, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>We all want to support the rollout of broadband, but this must not compromise the ability of elected councillors to ensure our streets are both safe and attractive.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If the government is serious about localism, it should realise that greater, not lesser, planning powers are needed for local communities to deal with the actions of irresponsible telecoms companies<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr Roberts suggested that London&#8217;s boroughs already have &#8220;<em>insufficient powers to control the visual appearance of their communities<\/em>&#8221; and have thus had to deal with a &#8220;<em>double-whammy of poor planning protections and poor consultation<\/em>&#8221; by telecoms companies.<\/p>\n<p>The comments, which form part of the London Councils official response to the related bills consultation, follows only two days after the government <strong>agreed to amend its bill<\/strong> in order to better <strong>protect national parks<\/strong> and other areas of outstanding natural beauty (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/03\/uk-government-softens-broadband-infrastructure-bill-to-protect-parks.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>London&#8217;s 33 local authorities have today warned that the UK government&#8217;s new Growth and Infrastructure Bill, which is designed boost the roll-out of faster broadband ISP services by cutting red tape in the planning system, could pass additional costs onto city boroughs and &#8220;endanger road users&#8221; by obstructing pedestrian walkways and reducing sightlines.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[474,471,86,38],"class_list":["post-2876","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-bt","tag-bduk","tag-law","tag-politics"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
