{"id":29203,"date":"2021-11-12T10:19:31","date_gmt":"2021-11-12T10:19:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=29203"},"modified":"2021-11-12T10:19:31","modified_gmt":"2021-11-12T10:19:31","slug":"ofcom-fine-met-technologies-and-guaranteed-telecom-for-slamming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/11\/ofcom-fine-met-technologies-and-guaranteed-telecom-for-slamming.html","title":{"rendered":"Ofcom Fine Met Technologies and Guaranteed Telecom for SLAMMING"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> has today fined two little-known UK broadband ISPs \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.met-technologies.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Met Technologies<\/a> (Met Plus Telecom and Millenium Talk) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guaranteedtelecom.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guaranteed Telecom<\/a> (Zoom Telecom) &#8211; a total of \u00a335,000 after they were found to have switched 110 consumers to their service without permission (SLAMMING).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The practice of <strong>SLAMMING<\/strong> is a mis-selling tactic that can occur when naughty people or ISPs trigger a switch (migration) of your service to another provider, albeit without you ever having given confirmed consent. The regulator&#8217;s existing migration rules are designed to protect against such abuse, but they&#8217;re far from perfect and so cases do still occur.<\/p>\n<p>The regulator&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/about-ofcom\/latest\/bulletins\/competition-bulletins\/open-cases\/cw_01250\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investigation<\/a> found that Guaranteed Telecom and Met Technologies slammed at least 110 customers throughout 2019 (43 and 67 respectively), a sizeable proportion of whom were elderly or vulnerable. In many cases, even when customers cancelled the order to take over their landline service, the companies still &#8220;<em>made repeated attempts to transfer them<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Both Guaranteed Telecom and Met Technologies also prevented at least 52 customers (27 and 25 respectively) from switching to another ISP after they had slammed them. As a result, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> fined Guaranteed Telecom \u00a310,000 and Met Technologies \u00a325,000.
