Owners of the first generation of YouView<\/a> (IPTV) powered Pay TV set-top-boxes (e.g. the retail Humax T1010), including the Humax T1000 from UK broadband ISP BT<\/a> and the Huawei DN370T from TalkTalk<\/a> (TT Plus Box), have been informed that they will “no longer be able to access<\/em>” the ITV Hub app from January 2022.<\/p>\n

Just in case anybody has forgotten. YouView<\/a> is a broadband internet (IPTV) based video-on-demand and catch-up TV platform that is being bundled by several ISPs across the United Kingdom and has also been sold at retail. Admittedly, YouView<\/a> may be losing ground to cheaper rivals (e.g. NetGem), but a lot of consumers today still have one of their boxes installed.<\/p>\n

However, as time goes on, it often becomes increasingly difficult to keep the first-generation hardware up-to-date with the latest features and that may be the problem here too. According to YouView, “ITV will be updating their content protection technology, which means new shows will no longer be available to watch on first generation YouView devices<\/em>” (i.e. this technology will not run on their older boxes).<\/p>\n

Apparently, owners will still be able to watch older shows, “but these will gradually start to disappear as they expire<\/em>” and “eventually<\/em>” the ITV Hub will be “removed from these devices.<\/em>” But the ITV Hub will continue to work and be available on other, more modern, YouView boxes and through their implementation on Sony’s TVs.<\/p>\n

Customers of BT<\/a> and TalkTalk<\/a> may be able to request an upgrade of their box (this could attract an additional cost), but others are simply told to try accessing the ITV Hub via a different device – it\u2019s available across quite a lot of devices and smartphones etc.<\/p>\n
