{"id":2932,"date":"2013-03-22T09:21:36","date_gmt":"2013-03-22T09:21:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=2932"},"modified":"2013-03-22T09:22:18","modified_gmt":"2013-03-22T09:22:18","slug":"ofcom-uk-approves-4g-spectrum-trading-between-mobile-operators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/03\/ofcom-uk-approves-4g-spectrum-trading-between-mobile-operators.html","title":{"rendered":"Ofcom Approves 4G Spectrum Trading Between UK Mobile Operators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> has confirmed that Mobile Network Operators (MNO) in the UK will soon be able to boost their Mobile Broadband network capacity, speeds, coverage and reliability by <strong>trading radio spectrum<\/strong> in the recently auctioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> (LTE) frequency bands of <strong>800MHz<\/strong> and <strong>2.6GHz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The move, which was announced on Tuesday, is expected to come into force on <strong>5th April 2013<\/strong> and means that mobile providers with a greater need for spectrum in a specific band (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a>) can now make offers to buy spectrum from those who need it less.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> has already established the framework for spectrum trading (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/story\/2011\/06\/20\/ofcom-uk-allows-mobile-broadband-spectrum-trading-between-operators.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>), which began in 2011 when the telecoms regulator first allowed trading of the <strong>900MHz<\/strong>, <strong>1800MHz<\/strong> and <strong>2100MHz<\/strong> bands (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> is using this method to pick-up some of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>&#8217;s 1800MHz spectrum in September 2013) and thus the new change &#8220;<em>should require little additional cost<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>The regulator believes that this will allow mobile operators to &#8220;<em>respond more efficiently to demand<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Ofcoms Statement on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> Spectrum Trading (PDF)<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk\/binaries\/consultations\/spectrum-trading-regs-jan13\/statement\/statement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk\/..\/statement.pdf<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ofcom has confirmed that Mobile Network Operators (MNO) in the UK will soon be able to boost their Mobile Broadband network capacity, speeds, coverage and reliability by trading radio spectrum in the recently auctioned 4G (LTE) frequency bands of 800MHz and 2.6GHz.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[61,60,36],"class_list":["post-2932","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-4g","tag-mobile-broadband","tag-ofcom-regulation"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
