Last year we wrote an article to examine how much each gigabit-capable UK ISP charges for their top 1Gbps (1000Mbps+) home broadband tier (here<\/a>). As promised, we’ve returned in 2022 to take another look and see whether the increasingly competitive market is having an impact on prices.<\/p>\n

As before, we’ll only be focusing on consumer orientated “full fibre<\/em>” (FTTP<\/a>\/B) networks and Virgin Media<\/a>’s infrastructure (a mix of FTTP<\/a> and Hybrid Fibre Coax via DOCSIS<\/a>). At present around 65% of UK premises are estimated to be within reach of a gigabit-capable broadband network (here<\/a>), which drops to over 30% when only considering FTTP services (i.e. Virgin’s HFC is currently responsible for most of the gigabit coverage).<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> Providers will usually advertise gigabit (1Gbps) packages alongside “average<\/em>” speeds of 900Mbps+, which reflects a 2018 requirement<\/a> by the Advertising Standards Authority<\/a> (ASA) for all ISPs to advertise the median as measured at peak time.<\/div>\n

Assuming the Government’s \u00a35bn Project Gigabit<\/a> rural broadband rollout programme achieves its targets, then we should see gigabit coverage reach around 85% by the end of 2025, before possibly achieving universal coverage by 2030 or later (here<\/a>). Gigabit speeds are not an automatic upgrade for existing connections, thus you’d need to order the package from a supporting ISP in order to receive it.<\/p>\n

In terms of cost, readers will notice that there are some significant price differences between ISPs below, which isn’t merely a reflection of the competitive market. Different packages often come attached to different features (e.g. static IP<\/a> addresses, better routers, public WiFi<\/a> etc.) and some networks have also been deployed using different methodologies or technologies, which impacts the price.<\/p>\n

For example, B4RN<\/a> adopts the community benefit society approach and operates a closed network, where the community helps to build and fund the infrastructure – this tends to result in a cheaper service (i.e. not profit orientated). By comparison, Openreach<\/a> (BT<\/a>) runs a commercial open access network, albeit one that has the baggage of heavily regulated copper infrastructure to balance (i.e. it’s usually more expensive).<\/p>\n

In addition, providers that build almost exclusively in rural areas also tend to be more expensive, as this reflects the higher cost of deployment. On the other hand, the new generation of commercial and urban-focused alternative network (AltNet) providers, many of which are trying to steal away customers from established players, can be much more aggressive on price.<\/p>\n

The Gigabit Comparison (Feb 2022 Data)<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Before we get started, it’s important to state that we will not be adding any new 1Gbps providers to this year’s list, and there are a couple of reasons for that. Firstly, a huge number of new providers have launched gigabit plans since last year’s update, thus we’d end up duplicating work on our ISP Listings<\/strong><\/a> page. Secondly, the goal of this update is to check how prices for existing services have changed, if at all, since 2021.<\/p>\n

Much like last year, our 2022 summary will generally only take a standalone package from each operator, except in cases where the package is unavoidably bundled alongside a voice (phone) product. We\u2019ll also reflect the post-contract pricing after any discounts, provided those discounts last the full length of the operator\u2019s initial minimum term (shorter discounts will be ignored as they’re harder to compare).<\/p>\n

The list also excludes gigabit plans that cost more than \u00a3100 per month – partly to keep our workload down and also because \u00a3100+ is moving into business level pricing, as well as plans where the ISP is unclear about who is building their underlying network(s). We’ll also skip ISPs that harness more than two underlying networks (each with different prices) as this causes too much repetition and complexity for us to reflect below.<\/p>\n

Overall, this list isn’t intended to be exhaustive, but it should help to illustrate common trends and changes over time. At present the only truly mass-market gigabit provider is Virgin Media<\/a>, which is available to nearly 16 million premises. Openreach<\/a> are some way behind that (over 6.44 million premises passed) and then there are the many smaller, albeit rapidly growing, AltNets.<\/p>\n

In order to save space, we aren’t listing upload speeds. However, it\u2019s worth noting that while many providers will give you symmetric uploads, a few often offer much slower uploads (e.g. Openreach-based networks, as well as Virgin and Broadway Broadband etc.). On most gigabit (1Gbps) plans this will still be 100Mbps+, which is more than enough for the majority of people, except on Virgin where they only offer uploads of 50Mbps.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> Prices are all inc. VAT. We don’t display one-off setup fees below (not enough space), but these tend to vary between \u00a30 and \u00a3200. The monthly prices in brackets are post-contract (after discounts) and nearly every package includes a router.<\/div>\n

Out of the 41 providers listed, only a couple saw a partial price increase – Vodafone<\/a> and Zen Internet<\/a> (we’ll come back to them later), while the rest either saw a significant price reduction or kept their prices unchanged. Speaking in real terms, prices that don’t change in this climate could also be considered as a reduction, due to the impact of inflation (CPI\/RPI ballooned in the last half of 2021).<\/p>\n

ISP Specific Observations<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u27a4 Leetline and No One (Trunk Networks) – Last year’s pricing reflected just their Openreach based products, but they’ve both since added CityFibre packages too and at a lower price.<\/p>\n

\u27a4 Telcom (WeFibre) – The website for this provider is light on detail, and thus we’re unsure of the contract term for their \u00a320 price point or whether that increases post-contract etc.<\/p>\n

\u27a4 Vodafone – In the original article they adopted the same pricing for both their Openreach and CityFibre based packages, while this year they’ve split them. In other words, Vodafone now charges less for their CityFibre packages than last year, but more for their Openreach plans – this makes sense because they now have many more CF ISPs to compete with than last year.<\/p>\n

\u27a4 Zen Internet – Zen’s CityFibre price in 2021 was a special launch offer that has since ended (going from \u00a340 to \u00a347.99), while their comparable Openreach based package has actually reduced in price.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Quite a few providers have also changed their minimum contract terms compared with last year. For example, Hyperoptic added 24-month contracts, whereas previously they only went up to 12-months (still an option). Similarly, KCOM adopted 18-months (up from 12 last year) and Lothian Broadband moved from an 18 to 12-month term. But the biggest change came from WightFibre, which scrapped their 24-month term for a rolling monthly contract.<\/p>\n

One other thing worth noting is that BT and sibling EE<\/a> are both continuing to be very competitive on price with rivals on the same Openreach platform. Admittedly, this list doesn’t include all the Openreach based FTTP providers that have launched gigabit plans since last year (there are quite a few), but generally BT remain well positioned against most – if not all – of those too.<\/p>\n

Broadly speaking, most full fibre providers have become cheaper than they were last year (or at least not more expensive), which is likely to be a direct or indirect result of rising competition at the infrastructure level. But there are limits to how far such ISPs can reduce their prices, since making the service too cheap risks harming the investment model for deployment (i.e. pushing the long payback window even further out).<\/p>\n

Some people may view these packages as expensive but, given the speed (not so long ago you’d be paying the same for an 80Mbps FTTC<\/a> tier), most of them are actually remarkably cheap for what you\u2019re getting. Admittedly, you might be able to find cheaper packages in other countries, but then the UK continues to trail most of Europe for FTTP coverage and thus our domestic market is still a long way from being fully developed.<\/p>\n

At this point it\u2019s worth remembering that the vast majority of consumers today would struggle to fully harness a 1Gbps connection. Slow WiFi<\/a>, general hardware restrictions and the performance limitations of various internet services (servers) mean that maxing out 1Gbps is still difficult to do at home (here<\/a>). Despite this, data demands never stop rising, and it certainly doesn\u2019t hurt to have this kind of speed at your disposal.<\/p>\n

Thankfully pretty much all the aforementioned providers also offer cheaper 100Mbps+ class packages, except those rare and wonderful exceptions like B4RN and toob<\/a><\/a>, where 1Gbps is both extremely cheap and their only tier. Only a very few providers (e.g. CommunityFibre<\/a>, B4RN and Zzoomm) currently offer faster plans than 1Gbps to homes and they’re usually into the \u00a3100+ level.<\/p>\n
