{"id":2995,"date":"2013-04-04T20:39:52","date_gmt":"2013-04-04T19:39:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=2995"},"modified":"2013-04-04T20:39:52","modified_gmt":"2013-04-04T19:39:52","slug":"4g-mobile-broadband-at-800mhz-likely-to-cause-fewer-tv-problems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/04\/4g-mobile-broadband-at-800mhz-likely-to-cause-fewer-tv-problems.html","title":{"rendered":"4G Mobile Broadband at 800MHz Likely to Cause Fewer TV Problems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fears that the new generation of superfast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> (LTE) based Mobile Broadband services, specifically those operating in the new <strong>800MHz<\/strong> radio spectrum band, could leave more than 2 million homes in the United Kingdom at risk of losing their <strong>Digital Terrestrial TV<\/strong> (Freeview) service could prove to be unfounded.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A recent pilot test of the new service by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/at800.tv\/\" target=\"_blank\">at800.tv<\/a><\/strong> (Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited), which was conducted in <strong>Cradley Heath<\/strong> and <strong>Rowley Regis<\/strong> (England&#8217;s West Midlands) with around <strong>22,000 homes<\/strong> during late March 2013, found that just <strong>15 households suffered reception problems<\/strong> (well below the official forecast of 120).<\/p>\n<p>The problems were verified on-site by professional aerial installers, as well as TV signal experts from at800.tv, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bbc\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>. Apparently &#8220;<em>all<\/em>&#8221; of the issues that could be attributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> interference (at800.tv received a total of over 100 calls) stemmed from television systems with signal amplifiers (usually placed directly on the aerial) and were solved by installing a simple filter to block the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> signals from reaching TV tuners.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Simon Beresford-Wylie, CEO of at800, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>This was a useful, small-scale test. We\u2019ll now improve our forecast model and look at the approach we use to tackle the issues we\u2019ve seen. Further extensive evaluation will occur during April and May [2013] as masts are switched on for tests across larger urban areas<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Plans for an urban-focused second test are expected to be announced &#8220;<em>soon<\/em>&#8220;, which is good because the first related 4G services are also\u00a0due to begin surfacing between late spring and the end of this year.
