{"id":30403,"date":"2022-03-10T09:43:17","date_gmt":"2022-03-10T09:43:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=30403"},"modified":"2022-03-10T09:43:17","modified_gmt":"2022-03-10T09:43:17","slug":"switching-survey-claims-7-million-uk-broadband-users-overpaying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/03\/switching-survey-claims-7-million-uk-broadband-users-overpaying.html","title":{"rendered":"Switching Survey Claims 7 Million UK Broadband Users Overpaying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new survey of 2,000 UK adults has estimated that around 6.95 million households are now out of contract with their current home broadband ISP, which they claim means that all of those customers could be &#8220;overpaying&#8221; by an average of \u00a3162 when out-of-contract (collective total of around \u00a31 billion).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uswitch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uswitch<\/a> commissioned study, which was conducted between 17th and 19th January 2022 by<strong> Opinium<\/strong>, warns that those in this group (7 million households) will be suffering from a &#8220;<em>double sting<\/em>&#8221; this year &#8211; overpaying because they are out of contract and also facing inflation-busting price rises of around 9-10% or more.<\/p>\n<p>At this point it&#8217;s worth noting that some providers, such as Giganet (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/02\/fibre-broadband-uk-isp-giganet-freezes-prices-for-2022.html\">here<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/fibrenest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FibreNest<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/01\/persimmon-homes-isp-fibrenest-keeps-broadband-prices-frozen.html\">here<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/kcom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">KCOM<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/01\/broadband-isp-kcom-scraps-inflation-linked-uk-price-hike.html\">here<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fibrus\" target=\"_blank\">Fibrus<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/01\/rival-uk-isp-fibrus-criticises-bt-over-broadband-price-hikes.html\">here<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildanet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wildanet<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/03\/cornwall-focused-isp-wildanet-keeps-broadband-prices-frozen.html\">here<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/gigaclear\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Gigaclear<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/03\/isp-gigaclear-freezes-uk-prices-for-18-months-ahead-of-2023-hike.html\">here<\/a>), have opted to keep prices frozen this year and many smaller providers haven&#8217;t increased their prices either. Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> introduced a much more traditional price rise (as opposed to the major hikes of their rivals), thus these survey results may not be entirely reflective.<\/p>\n<p>On the issue of &#8220;<em>overpaying<\/em>,&#8221; it&#8217;s also important to remember that price alone isn&#8217;t the only deciding factor and consumers also tend to consider other aspects, such as service and support quality or value-added extras (some features may not be found on rivals), which isn&#8217;t reflected by this survey. Suffice to say, if your current provider has continued to deliver a good service, then you&#8217;re less likely to consider switching.<\/p>\n<p>The survey also fails to establish how many consumers may have alternatively haggled for a lower price, or even been offered a lower price automatically, to stay with their existing ISP (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2017\/04\/retentions-tips-cutting-broadband-bill-without-switching-isp.html\">Retentions &#8211; Tips for Cutting Your Broadband Bill<\/a><\/strong>). The new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/02\/end-of-contract-letters-to-start-for-uk-broadband-isps-and-mobile.html\"><strong>end-of-contract notifications<\/strong><\/a> system arguably makes existing customers much more likely to try this approach, rather than switch, unless they&#8217;re unhappy with their ISP&#8217;s performance.<\/p>\n<p>At present a lot of the best deals today are coming from the rise of alternative network providers, many of which are busy deploying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> across the UK to rival the established players.
