{"id":30411,"date":"2022-03-10T22:30:58","date_gmt":"2022-03-10T22:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=30411"},"modified":"2022-03-11T09:18:03","modified_gmt":"2022-03-11T09:18:03","slug":"620-public-buildings-in-wales-upgraded-via-full-fibre-broadband","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/03\/620-public-buildings-in-wales-upgraded-via-full-fibre-broadband.html","title":{"rendered":"620 Public Buildings in Wales Upgraded via Full Fibre Broadband"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK Government (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bduk\" target=\"_blank\">Building Digital UK<\/a>) has this evening announced the completion of the &#8220;<em>largest public sector broadband project<\/em>&#8221; in Wales, which has enabled 620 public sector sites (hospitals, police stations, libraries etc.) to get access to a lightning-fast full fibre network connection.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The upgrades, which were supported by public investment totalling <strong>\u00a311.5 million<\/strong>, have been delivered via both the original <strong>Local Full Fibre Networks<\/strong> (LFFN) programme and the follow-on <strong>Rural Gigabit Connectivity<\/strong> (RGC) Hubs programme.<\/p>\n<p>Such deployments have tended to adopt the anchor tenancy approach (i.e. public sector sites\/organisations become the anchor tenant for a new network), which means that, in theory, nearby businesses and homes could eventually benefit as the network could be expanded to support future <strong>Fibre-to-the-Premises<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) services from broadband ISPs (this usually requires additional private investment).<\/p>\n<p>All of this was centred around four projects, which we&#8217;ve summarised below.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>LFFN &amp; RGC Hub Projects &#8211; Details<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cardiff Capital Region LFFN Project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Delivered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/welshgov\" target=\"_blank\">Welsh Government<\/a>, working with the ten local authorities that make up the Cardiff Capital Region City Deal. \u00a32.5m UK funding, 166 public sites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pembrokeshire County Council LFFN Public Sector Project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Delivered by Pembrokeshire County Council. \u00a31m UK funding, 68 public sites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>North Wales LFFN Challenge Fund Project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Denbighshire-led, working with the six local authorities that make up the North Wales Economic Ambition Board. \u00a36.5m UK funding, 311 public sites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RGC Hub &#8211; Rest of Wales Project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Delivered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/welshgov\" target=\"_blank\">Welsh Government<\/a>, working with 11 rural local authorities in Wales. \u00a30.93m UK funding, 75 public sites.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Julia Lopez, UK Digital Infrastructure Minister, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ve funded hundreds of faster broadband upgrades across Wales to put public services in the digital fast lane so they can deliver more for communities.<\/p>\n<p>This is on top of our \u00a35 billion Project Gigabit which will bring better broadband to tens of thousands of rural homes and businesses across Wales and the UK that would otherwise be left behind.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At present just 30% of homes and businesses in Wales (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/07\/2021-h1-uk-gigabit-broadband-coverage-reaches-42-percent.html\">here<\/a>) can access a gigabit-capable broadband connection (c.42% for the UK), although commercial deployments are expected to give this a significant boost over the next few years. This reflects major deployments from operators like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/06\/openreach-adds-551-uk-locations-to-fttp-broadband-rollout.html\">here<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> (VMO2) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/spectruminternet\" target=\"_blank\">Ogi<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/06\/spectrum-internet-ogi-start-huge-full-fibre-rollout-in-wales.html\">here<\/a>), but a large gap is still expected to remain post-completion.<\/p>\n<p>The Government recently indicated that this could leave &#8220;<em>up to<\/em>&#8221; <strong>234,000 premises<\/strong> in hard-to-reach rural areas of <strong>Wales<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/06\/234000-premises-in-wales-to-benefit-from-5bn-project-gigabit.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/08\/welsh-gov-consults-on-gigabit-broadband-coverage-in-wales.html\">here<\/a>) as potentially being in scope of the new Project Gigabit programme (i.e. they won\u2019t benefit from the commercial build and thus require public subsidy to go further). But it&#8217;s likely to be another year or two before we see that plan being turning into physical build.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, you can find a list below of all the locations where public sector sites
