{"id":30940,"date":"2022-05-06T10:45:40","date_gmt":"2022-05-06T09:45:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=30940"},"modified":"2022-05-06T10:45:40","modified_gmt":"2022-05-06T09:45:40","slug":"end-of-contract-letters-by-uk-broadband-isps-boost-re-contracting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/05\/end-of-contract-letters-by-uk-broadband-isps-boost-re-contracting.html","title":{"rendered":"End of Contract Letters by UK Broadband ISPs Boost Re-Contracting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> has today posted some additional analysis on the impact of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/02\/end-of-contract-letters-to-start-for-uk-broadband-isps-and-mobile.html\"><strong>End-of-Contract Notifications<\/strong><\/a> (ECN) system, which reveals that customer re-contracting on major broadband ISPs has increased as a result of its introduction &#8211; varying from a rise of 13% on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/plusnetuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Plusnet<\/a> to just 3% on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The regulator&#8217;s ECN system &#8211; as first introduced in February 2020 &#8211; requires all fixed broadband, mobile, home phone and pay TV providers to issue such notifications to existing subscribers at the end of their term (sent by text, email or letter). The move was intended to help tackle the so-called &#8220;<em>loyalty penalty<\/em>&#8221; by keeping customers informed about the best deals on their current provider and encouraging switching.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/consultations-and-statements\/category-2\/helping-consumers-get-better-deals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">additional analysis<\/a> published today is intended to complement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s previous November 2021 review (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/11\/ofcoms-end-of-contract-notifications-deliver-broadband-savings.html\">here<\/a>), which among other things found that the proportion of broadband customers who switched or re-contracted three months prior to or three months after their minimum contract period ended increased from 47% in July 2019 to 62% in September 2020.<\/p>\n<p>In the new update, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> used data provided to them by broadband ISPs to measure the impact of their ECN policy intervention on: 1) the rate at which customers re-contract at the end of their minimum contract period, and 2) the prices broadband customers paid after re-contracting in response to an ECN.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Econometric analysis &#8211; Percentage point increase in re-contracting due to ECNs<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/plusnetuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Plusnet<\/a> 13%<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a> 8%<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> 10%<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a> 3%<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> 10%<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> 10%<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Econometric analysis &#8211; Price effects of re-contracting in response to receiving an ECN<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n(<em>the average monthly price differences for those who responded to an ECN<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/plusnetuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Plusnet<\/a> = Statistically insignificant effect<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a> -\u00a39.26<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> \u00a32.45<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a> \u00a37.81<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> -\u00a37.74<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> = Statistically insignificant effect<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Clearly, re-contracting customers with some communication providers paid lower prices, and higher prices with others. Naturally, those who re-contract can&#8217;t always expect to get a cheaper price than they currently pay for their existing service, which is because prices often rise each year, and you&#8217;ll usually only re-contract at the end of a longer 18-24 month term.
