Hull-based ISP KCOM<\/a>, which is busy rolling out a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP<\/a>) broadband network across East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire (England), has reported that their service now reaches over 300,000 premises across the region (up from the c.250,000 at the end of last year) and they’ve also got 150 wholesale partners.<\/p>\n

The Hull-based network provider has also announced that the number of customers using services provided by other ISPs – via their wholesale full fibre platform – has increased by 60% to more than 5,000 in the past 12 months, although they haven’t offered an overall total. This still represents a small slice of their total broadband base (direct KCOM<\/a> retail and wholesale), which reflects around 140,000 customers.<\/p>\n

Just to recap. KCOM<\/a> previously invested \u00a385m+<\/strong> to spread FTTP<\/a> across their core network patch of c.195,000 premises in the Hull city area. Soon after that the operator was acquired by Macquarie Infrastructure for the hefty sum of \u00a3627m (here<\/a>) and in early 2020 they began a large \u00a3100m<\/strong> network expansion into more competitive areas of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (here<\/a>), which continues today.<\/p>\n

KCOM CEO, Tim Shaw, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“KCOM Wholesale provides a great platform for other ISPs to sell their services across Hull, East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, giving a greater range of choice to the end consumer. I\u2019m delighted to see our wholesale business is going from strength to strength and constantly bringing onboard new partners to make this happen.<\/p>\n

This shows how, by working together with resellers, everyone can benefit \u2013 from our partners accessing our world class infrastructure, to their end customers who receive great products delivered over one of the best networks in the UK. Among the partners using our network is everyone from quality local ISPs to national, household-name, telecoms giants.<\/p>\n

And the fact that the numbers of customers using services delivered by our partners has increased by 60 per cent in a single year shows there\u2019s a huge demand for different services from alternative providers creating choice and competition in the market.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The biggest challenge for KCOM going forward is that a number of alternative networks are now actively starting to overbuild their own FTTP<\/a> with rival infrastructure, which may eventually force KCOM to offer much more competitive pricing in even their traditional safe haven of Hull (so far most of their discounted rates have only been offered in recent network expansion areas – where rivals often already exist).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
