Seemingly in the hope of finding more ways to help those who may be struggling to pay their bills.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2022\/06\/21\/telecom-chiefs-summoned-downing-street-discuss-cost-living-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Telegraph<\/a>, CEOs from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> (VMO2), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a> and others (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>) are all expected to attend the meeting next Monday. The move comes after most of the major operators imposed annual price hikes of up to around 10% on their customers. But in fairness, such operators are not immune to the rising costs and do have to pass that on at some point.<\/p>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s not the first time that the Government has attempted to pressure the telecommunications industry into doing more. We saw similar activity during the <strong>COVID-19<\/strong> pandemic, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> has since been partially successful in encouraging provider&#8217;s to launch cheaper <strong>Social Tariffs<\/strong> for those on benefits. But awareness of these remains low, and most ISPs continue to hide them away on separate pages from their main packages.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/phones-telecoms-and-internet\/information-for-industry\/policy\/affordability-of-communications-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Affordability Report<\/strong><\/a>, some 1.1 million households (5% of the UK) are &#8220;<em>struggling to afford their home broadband service<\/em>&#8221; and so could stand to benefit from such tariffs. However, out of an estimated 4.2 million households in receipt of <strong>Universal Credit<\/strong>, just 55,000 homes have so far taken such a package (1.2% of those eligible).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>A Spokesperson for the Goverment (DCMS) said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are looking at bringing together the UK&#8217;s telecoms leaders to explore how the industry can work together with the government to support consumers through the global rise in the cost of living.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s worth pointing out that the competitive market means it&#8217;s often possible for most people to switch to a different provider or package and save money, if they so desire. Likewise, the value we all get back from broadband and mobile services has increased over previous years, which means you can often get bigger mobile data allowances or faster fixed line speeds for less money today &#8211; the latter is admittedly dependent upon how much competition exists in your area (experiences do vary).<\/p>\n<p>So if money is a problem and your provider puts its prices up, then don&#8217;t be afraid to vote with your feet and leave, or try to renegotiate (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2017\/04\/retentions-tips-cutting-broadband-bill-without-switching-isp.html\"><strong>Retention Tips<\/strong><\/a>). Speaking of the competitive market, it&#8217;s worth noting that many smaller providers have opted to buck the trend and keep their prices frozen this year (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/gigaclear\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Gigaclear<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/truespeed\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Truespeed<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/kcom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">KCOM<\/a>, Giganet, FibreNest, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fibrus\" target=\"_blank\">Fibrus<\/a> etc.) and some mobile operators, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/giffgaffmobile\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">giffgaff<\/a>, did the same.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the price we all pay for communication services is largely dwarfed by the colossal hikes in energy (i.e. gas, electricity and &#8211; to a lesser extent &#8211; water), petrol and other bills. If people are struggling to afford even a fairly basic broadband or mobile package, then they&#8217;ve probably got much more serious considerations when it comes to other areas, such as heating their homes in winter, getting to work or buying food to live.<\/p>\n<p>Lest we forget that broadband and mobile are also extremely important services that can help you to save money and solve other problems (shopping, insurance, finding jobs etc.), thus it could easily be argued that such services more than pay for themselves in respect to the value they return.<\/p>\n<p>In short, we&#8217;re not really sure what more the Government hopes to extract from mobile and broadband providers. Perhaps we might see a move toward greater promotion of social tariffs, or maybe they&#8217;ll finally clamp-down on mid-contract price hikes. Who knows. Ofcom has previously threatened mandatory social tariffs for all ISPs too, but they\u2019d do better to first tackle the issue of awareness.<\/p>\n<p>We can only hope that the meeting ends up being more than just another PR opportunity for the Government to make it look like they&#8217;re doing something, albeit without actually making any major changes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UK government, which wants to be seen as at least trying to do something about the cost of living crisis, has reportedly summoned bosses from most of the major mobile and broadband providers to Downing Street next week.
