{"id":3176,"date":"2013-05-01T08:44:43","date_gmt":"2013-05-01T07:44:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=3176"},"modified":"2013-05-01T08:44:43","modified_gmt":"2013-05-01T07:44:43","slug":"lottery-funding-helps-remote-shetland-islands-village-get-fast-broadband","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/05\/lottery-funding-helps-remote-shetland-islands-village-get-fast-broadband.html","title":{"rendered":"Lottery Funding Helps Remote Shetland Islands Village Get Fast Broadband"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The tiny community of <strong>West Burrafirth<\/strong> on the remote Shetland Islands (North of Scotland) will soon see their broadband ISP speeds lifted from just 0.16Mbps (Megabits per second) to around 25Mbps thanks to a new wireless and fibre optic link, support from a local ISP and national lottery funding.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>West Burrafirth Community Broadband Group<\/strong> (WBCBG) represents just seven households and to date <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> has, perhaps understandably, shown little interest in upgrading the connectivity. As a result the locals decided to do-it-themselves, albeit with a little help from local ISP <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shetlandbroadband.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Shetland Broadband<\/a> and a grant of <strong>\u00a39,700<\/strong> from the National Lottery.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s understood that the service, which &#8220;<em>officially<\/em>&#8221; goes live today (though it&#8217;s technically already online), made use of a previously redundant 30-year old TV mast that now stands on top of a hill at Engamoor and is powered by little more than a small wind turbine (we assume this has a battery backup).<\/p>\n<p>The mast connects via two Microwave dish signals back to Shurton Hill 15 miles away (near Lerwick) and from there the connection links into Shetland Telecom&#8217;s fibre optic cable, which ultimately connects to the undersea SHEFA2 cable.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>John White, WBCBG Chairman, said (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shetlandtimes.co.uk\/2013\/04\/30\/great-leap-forward-for-internet-surfers-in-west-burrafirth\" target=\"_blank\">Shetland Times<\/a>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>We are really pleased that we have been able to get the funding and infrastructure in place to ensure our community can access superfast broadband speeds.
