Low cost focused UK ISP TalkTalk<\/a> has finally reached an agreement to acquire around 100,000 broadband and phone customers from rival operator Ovo Energy<\/a>, which is perhaps more familiar to consumers by the brand name of SSE (i.e. OVO’s retail division acquired that base in 2020 and has retained the brand under licence).<\/p>\n

Ovo originally acquired SSE’s household energy and broadband business for \u00a3500m<\/strong> in January 2020 (here<\/a>) – a deal comprising \u00a3400m in cash and \u00a3100m in loan notes. But since then, most UK energy providers have been hit by a tsunami of problems due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the massive surge in energy prices. Ovo itself recently had to cut around a quarter of its UK workforce (1,700 staff) and is re-focusing on their core energy business.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> SSE’s internet and phone customers are currently provided by Vodafone<\/a>.<\/div>\n

Back in May 2022 we reported that TalkTalk<\/a> was in discussions with OVO about acquiring SSE’s internet access base for an undisclosed sum (here<\/a>). The big news this week is that OVO has now confirmed that they’re in the “final stages of agreeing [that] sale<\/em>“. As part of that agreement, SSE has also given permission for their brand to be “used under licence<\/em>” until April 2023<\/strong> to support a smooth transition.<\/p>\n

OVO states that they’re currently continuing consultations with trade unions and employee representatives on the matter, but completion of the transition is currently expected to take place during this Autumn 2022<\/strong>. The migration will then require several months, as both company’s will need to take care when shifting customers from Vodafone<\/a>’s platform to TalkTalk<\/a> (such work can sometimes cause problems with billing and connections).<\/p>\n

OVO Statement to Customers<\/strong><\/p>\n

We want to reassure you that, right now, nothing is changing \u2013 your prices and your terms and conditions will stay exactly the same, and there\u2019s nothing you need to do. We\u2019re still just as committed as ever to great customer service, and so are TalkTalk.<\/p>\n

TalkTalk are phone and broadband experts \u2013 bringing reliable service at great value to all their customers. We trust them to carry on giving you the same high level of service you\u2019re used to. OVO will stay focused on energy and the goal of bringing clean power to everyone.<\/p>\n

Both TalkTalk and OVO \/ SSE have tended to adopt a similar low-cost approach to their broadband packages, thus SSE’s broadband and phone customers shouldn’t expect too much to change on that front in the future. But it’s worth noting that TalkTalk do attract quite a few customer complaints (here<\/a>) and so there’s a possibility that service or support quality may decline, although experiences do vary.<\/p>\n

The SSE website has setup an FAQ page<\/a> for the change, although at present it’s fairly bland and doesn’t really add anything to what has already been said above. The announcement itself comes after Virgin Media<\/a> (VMO2) is alleged to have made a \u00a33bn bid to acquire TalkTalk’s 4 million customers (here<\/a>) to help support their future plans, but we’re unlikely to hear anything more official on that until after the OVO deal has completed.<\/p>\n

UPDATE 3:17pm<\/strong><\/p>\n

TalkTalk has just issued a comment on all this, albeit two days behind OVO’s announcement.<\/p>\n
