{"id":32083,"date":"2022-08-30T12:34:32","date_gmt":"2022-08-30T11:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=32083"},"modified":"2022-08-30T12:35:59","modified_gmt":"2022-08-30T11:35:59","slug":"virgin-media-o2-uk-and-nec-extend-openran-mobile-to-field-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/08\/virgin-media-o2-uk-and-nec-extend-openran-mobile-to-field-trial.html","title":{"rendered":"Virgin Media O2 UK and NEC Extend OpenRAN Mobile to Field Trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Broadband and mobile giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> (VMO2) has today announced that their early tests of Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN or O-RAN) technology &#8211; supported by NEC and Rakuten Symphony &#8211; are now being extended to the field phase, which will see the activation of the first live sites in VMO2&#8217;s commercial mobile network.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The O-RAN approach seeks to standardise the design and functionality of radio access hardware and software, thus increasing the number of companies able to supply operators via vendor-neutral hardware and software-defined technology (the RAN side covers infrastructure, masts and antennae). This may also help to cut costs and removes the necessity to depend upon the largest suppliers of such kit (e.g. <strong>Nokia<\/strong> and <strong>Ericsson<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>All the major UK mobile network operators are currently looking at O-RAN solutions for the future and have even agreed to a &#8220;<em>joint ambition<\/em>&#8221; with the government, which will see 35% of the UK\u2019s mobile network traffic being carried over O-RAN by 2030 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/12\/all-public-2g-and-3g-uk-mobile-services-switched-off-by-2033.html\">here<\/a>). But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> is the only operator to have started a solid large-scale commercial build (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/01\/vodafone-switches-on-uks-first-scaled-5g-mobile-openran-site.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/03\/vodafone-uk-name-7-new-rural-towns-for-openran-4g-network.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Mobile operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> (VMO2) has also been working on similar solutions with NEC for a while (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/02\/o2-uk-and-nec-claim-success-in-recent-openran-mobile-trial.html\">here<\/a>), which seems to now be bearing some fruit with the activation of their first live OpenRAN macro-sites on VMO2&#8217;s commercial network.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at VMO2, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The successful activation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a>\u2019s first UK macro-sites demonstrates the potential of the multi-vendor Open RAN model. We are strong believers in the power of diverse Open RAN ecosystems and in NEC, we have a partner that really shares our view.
