{"id":33407,"date":"2023-01-13T10:34:16","date_gmt":"2023-01-13T10:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=33407"},"modified":"2023-01-13T10:34:16","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T10:34:16","slug":"ofcom-uk-removes-fax-service-obligation-from-bt-and-kcom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/01\/ofcom-uk-removes-fax-service-obligation-from-bt-and-kcom.html","title":{"rendered":"Ofcom UK Removes FAX Service Obligation from BT and KCOM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As expected, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> has today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/consultations-and-statements\/category-3\/removing-fax-bt-and-kcom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirmed<\/a> that the requirement for certain UK telecoms operators to provide &#8220;<em>outdated<\/em>&#8221; FAX (facsimile) services under their legally-binding Universal Service Obligation (USO), which only applies to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/kcom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">KCOM<\/a>, has officially been removed.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The related obligation was last set in 2003, when fax machines were much more prevalent and email and instant messaging were less ubiquitous. But the current move to adopt full fibre (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) broadband ISP lines and all-<a class=\"shortlink shortlink-105 shortlink-chref\" title=\"internet protocol address\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/jargon\/jargon_detail.php?IP---Internet-Protocol-42\">IP<\/a> (Internet Protocol) based phone services (VoIP etc.) &#8211; whether via copper or optical fibre infrastructure &#8211; will hamper how the old analogue FAX system operates.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>This change does not mean that fax services will stop working immediately, but remaining users of fax will need to look for alternatives &#8230; (such as email) ahead of their telephony networks being migrated to IP &#8211; the timescales for this will depend on their telephony provider, but is expected to be before the end of 2025<\/em>,&#8221; said the regulator.<\/p>\n<p>FAX can sometimes still to made to work, but the timing and synchronisation that it relies on for the duration of the transmission can no longer be guaranteed to work in the same way.
