But the subscriber growth rate of &#8220;<em>full fibre<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>\/B) networks in the UK appears to have slowed in recent quarters.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As usual, the largest regional broadband market of East Asia has maintained the lion&#8217;s share of net additions of fixed broadband subscribers &#8211; reaching 65.5% in Q3 2022, which is mainly due to China&#8217;s market size and more than 15 million fixed broadband subscribers being added there. By comparison, the whole of Europe (inc. UK) accounts for just 5.62% of net adds in the last quarter. But it&#8217;s the changes in technology that we&#8217;re most interested in.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> The report only examined the highest full fibre growth rates in the largest fibre markets &#8211; those with at least 0.5 million fibre broadband connections.<\/div>\n<p>The data shows that, overall, both cable (hybrid fibre coax) and copper (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">ADSL<\/a>, SDSL) based broadband connections continued to lose market share as full fibre lines cannibalised their customers. Between Q3 2022 and Q3 2021, the number of cable (Hybrid Fibre Coax) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">ADSL<\/a> broadband connections saw their market shares shrink further to 17% and 9.4% respectively, while the share of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a> connections has increased to 61.4% (FTTB accounted for another 4% of the global total). See below for the annual change.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" style=\"padding: 0px; width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2023-uk-internet-statistics\/Point-Topic-Q3-2022-Growth-in-Subscribers-by-Broadband-Technology.jpg\" alt=\"Point-Topic-Q3-2022-Growth-in-Subscribers-by-Broadband-Technology\"><\/div>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s interesting to take a look at the quarterly growth of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>\/B subscribers in Q3 2022, since the United Kingdom seems to have vanished from the top list. Back in Q3 2021 the UK was, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/pointtopic\" target=\"_blank\">Point Topic<\/a>, reporting a quarterly growth rate for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a> subscribers of 12%, placing us in 4th position out of the top 15 countries for related growth. But in the latest table, the UK doesn&#8217;t even register.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the historical trends, the UK reported quarterly growth, this time for both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a> and FTTB subscribers combined, of 12.5% in Q4 2021, before vanishing from the table in Q1 2022 and then re-appearing to record a strong growth rate of 12.9% in Q2 2022.<\/p>\n<p>We haven&#8217;t seen a sharp decline or stalling of adoption during the Q3 2022 period &#8211; using our own data sources, thus our assumption is that the UK simply fell a little below <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/pointtopic\" target=\"_blank\">Point Topic<\/a>&#8217;s subscriber threshold for inclusion in the latest report.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><span class=\"EilAw\" dir=\"auto\">Top 15 markets by FTTH\/B growth rates<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" style=\"padding: 0px; width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2023-uk-internet-statistics\/Point-Topic-Q3-2022-Growth-in-FTTH-FTTB-Subscriber-Growth-by-Country.png\" alt=\"Point-Topic-Q3-2022-Growth-in-FTTH-FTTB-Subscriber-Growth-by-Country\"><\/p>\n<p>Speaking more generally, the research did note that FTTH\/B subscriber growth <span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">was overall slower than in Q2 2022, which it put down to the current economic woes. &#8220;<em>As recession started to bite &#8230; consumers were more reluctant to switch to more advanced broadband plans, slowing down fibre broadband adoption<\/em>,&#8221; said the report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s worth noting that the United Kingdom does still appear when we look at the top countries by raw FTTH\/B net additions, where we place 7th in the table (390,000 subscribers added). This is an identical figure to the one recorded in Q2 2022, although it is sharply down on the 720,000 seen in Q1 2022.
