Cable ISP Virgin Media<\/a> UK has started the roll-out of its latest \u00a3110m<\/strong> national network upgrade (original news<\/a>), which at no extra cost<\/strong> (assuming you choose to ignore Virgin’s recent price hike) aims to at least double its customers broadband speeds<\/strong> (except on their ADSL2+ based Virgin.net \/ Virgin National platform).

\nThe first customers were upgraded this week<\/strong> and the full deployment is expected to take a whopping 18 months<\/strong> (completion is due by the middle of 2013).<\/p>\n

Planned VirginMedia Download Speed Upgrades<\/strong>
\n* 10Mb increased to 20Mb [2Mbps Uploads]
\n* 20Mb and 30Mb increased to 60Mb [6Mbps Uploads]
\n* 50Mb increased to 120Mb [12Mbps Uploads]
\n* 100Mb increased to 120Mb [12Mbps Uploads]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Some 1.5 Million cable homes<\/strong> are expected to be upgraded between March and April 2012; starting with Newcastle, Ashford, Ipswich, Dundee, Belfast and Cambridge. Further details can be found here: www.virginmedia.com\/doublespeed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jon James, Virgin Media<\/a>’s Executive Director of Broadband, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

One additional exception to this remains Virgin’s latest 100Mbps<\/strong> package, which is still being rolled out (due mid-2012) and will thus only receive a more casual boost to 120Mbps.
