Network builder Freedom Fibre<\/a>, which aims to cover over 2 million UK premises with their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP<\/a>) network and is being supported by ISP TalkTalk<\/a>, has awarded thousands of pounds worth of grants to 13 local community schemes in some of the areas where their new infrastructure is being built.<\/p>\n

In case anybody has forgotten, Freedom Fibre<\/a> initially set aside \u00a34,000<\/strong> for their new “Freedom Fund<\/em><\/a>” at the end of 2022 (potentially rising to \u00a360k by the end of 2023), which is open to non-profit groups and was welcoming applications for up to \u00a3250 per community project. The fund is now closed for applications, but it is expected to re-open again sometime this year.<\/p>\n

In total, thirteen community groups from Culcheth (Cheshire), Irlam (Salford), Weaverham (Cheshire) and Whitchurch (Shropshire) received \u00a3250 each from the company\u2019s Freedom Fund to help deliver environmental projects.<\/p>\n

Winners of the Freedom Fund (Initial Round)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    Croft Village Memorial Hall, Culcheth<\/strong> received \u00a3250 towards environmental projects in their grounds including installing bird and bat boxes.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    Warrington Sunday Litter Team<\/strong> received \u00a3250 to purchase new litter picking equipment for their volunteer teams in Culcheth, Croft and Winwick.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Friends of Irlam Library<\/strong> received \u00a3250 to transform a courtyard in to a fully-accessible green space within the library<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Princes Park Garden Centre, Irlam<\/strong> received \u00a3250 towards a rainwater collection system.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    Poorlots Allotments<\/strong>, Irlam<\/strong> received \u00a3250 to help create a nature reserve on a derelict piece of land;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  6. \n

    The Rotary Club of Irlam<\/strong> received \u00a3250 towards an ecoflow portable power unit to power their Santa Float in future years.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  7. \n

    Weaverham Community Memorial Orchard<\/strong> received \u00a3250 towards an information board so that visitors can identify and learn about the different varieties of fruit grown.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  8. \n

    Weaverham Parish Council<\/strong> received \u00a3250 to contribute towards the installation of solar panels on the roof of the community centre.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  9. \n

    The Inner Wheel Club of Whitchurch<\/strong> received \u00a3250 to continue adopting derelict pieces of land across the town to transform them in to community gardens.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    St. Alkmund\u2019s Church, Whitchurch<\/strong> was awarded \u00a3250 for green improvements at the church, including creating bug hotels, installing bird boxes and putting in an information board.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  11. \n

    Whitchurch Walkers<\/strong> were awarded \u00a3250 to help raise promote the group\u2019s \u2018Walkers are Welcome\u2019 campaign throughout the town.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  12. \n

    The Queensway Area Residential and Recreational Association, Whitchurch<\/strong> received \u00a3250 to plant a range of pollinating plants across Queensway Playing Fields.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  13. \n

    Brownlow Community Centre Trust, Whitchurch<\/strong> was awarded \u00a3250 to replace fluorescent lighting with more efficient, environmentally friendly LED lighting.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Neil McArthur, Freedom Fibre<\/a>\u2019s Chief Executive Officer, said: “I\u2019m absolutely delighted that we have been able to make awards to these very worthy causes. Playing our part in the communities in which we are working is so important to us \u2013 I can\u2019t wait to see these projects come to fruition!<\/em>”<\/p>\n

    The operator, which is being backed by a \u00a384m investment from Equitix and a \u00a316m Santander debt facility, was previously aiming to cover 70,000 premises by the end of 2022 (they\u2019d done 40k by Nov 2022 and are quickly ramping up) and they have a long-term aspiration to reach over 2 million UK properties (Coverage Map<\/a>).<\/p>\n
