{"id":34005,"date":"2023-03-20T09:05:14","date_gmt":"2023-03-20T09:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=34005"},"modified":"2023-03-20T09:05:14","modified_gmt":"2023-03-20T09:05:14","slug":"ofcom-see-average-uk-fixed-broadband-isp-speeds-hit-65-3mbps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/03\/ofcom-see-average-uk-fixed-broadband-isp-speeds-hit-65-3mbps.html","title":{"rendered":"Ofcom See Average UK Fixed Broadband ISP Speeds Hit 65.3Mbps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK telecoms regulator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>, has posted a small interim update to the data they hold on fixed line home broadband ISP speeds, which reveals that the average (median) UK download speed has increased to 65.3Mbps (up by 10% from 59.4Mbps six months ago) and uploads hit 15.5Mbps (up by 45% from 10.7Mbps).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s study is based off data gathered during September 2022 via both custom modified routers from <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-139 shortlink-chref\" title=\"samknows\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/samknows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.samknows.com\">SamKnows<\/a> (panel size of around 2,600 homes) and ISP supplied routers with the company&#8217;s Agent software onboard. This method of testing, which is conducted at router level during idle periods of use, is extremely accurate, not least because it can remove the negative impact of issues like local network congestion and slow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> The data is sadly restricted to reflecting only the biggest ISPs, due to limited data from smaller players.<\/div>\n<p>The full and much more detailed annual update is due to be published later this year and thus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/research-and-data\/telecoms-research\/broadband-research\/broadband-speeds\/uk-home-broadband-performance,-measurement-period-september-2022-published-march-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this report<\/a> is fairly sparse, but it does provide a useful update on progress based on real-world speed testing (NOT network availability). As you&#8217;d expect, the main driver of rising speeds continues to be the growing adoption of ultrafast class broadband packages and related network expansions (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> etc.), but many people have yet to upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>The proportion of homes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s research with broadband connections that use a &#8220;<em>superfast<\/em>&#8221; package (advertised speeds of 30Mbps+) was 93% (up from 92% six months ago), while just 10% (up from 8%) were on &#8220;<em>ultrafast<\/em>&#8221; packages (Ofcom defines this as 300Mbps+).<\/p>\n<p>The regulator also noted that less than 3% of households had average download speeds of below 10Mbit\/s (USO level), with cable (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>) connections offering the highest average download speed (1139Mbit\/s). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> also had the joint-fastest average upload speed, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s 300 Mbit\/s service, at around 51Mbit\/s.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"line-height: 29px;\"><p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Average UK Median Download Speeds (Upload) <\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n\u27a4 2022 [Sept 2022] = 65.3Mbps (15.5Mbps)<br \/>\n\u27a4 2022 [March 2022] = 59.4Mbps (10.7Mbps)<br \/>\n\u27a4 2021 = 50.4Mbps (9.8Mbps)<br \/>\n\u27a4 2020 = 50Mbps (9.8Mbps)<br \/>\n\u27a4 2019 = 42.1Mbps (9.3Mbps)<br \/>\n\u27a4 2018 = 37Mbps (6Mbps)<br \/>\n\u27a4 2017 = 36Mbps (5Mbps)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The new data also includes a comparison of average speeds (median) by broadband technology, although this table doesn&#8217;t split down by package class and is heavily influenced by the strong take-up of 100Mbps+ plans on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>&#8217;s much more widely available Cable network (hence why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> looks slower).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" style=\"padding: 0px; width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2023-uk-internet-statistics\/Ofcom-Sept-2022-Average-Broadband-Speeds-by-Technology.png\" alt=\"Ofcom-Sept-2022-Average-Broadband-Speeds-by-Technology\"><\/p>\n<p>We expect the full report, which will use more recent data, to be published around the end of summer or early autumn.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has posted a small interim update to the data they hold on fixed line home broadband ISP speeds, which reveals that the average (median) UK download speed has increased to 65.3Mbps (up by 10% from 59.4Mbps six months ago) and uploads hit 15.5Mbps (up by 45% from 10.7Mbps).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":22300,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[474,36,34,475],"class_list":["post-34005","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-bt","tag-ofcom-regulation","tag-statistics","tag-virgin-media"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
