We take a quick look back to see how the average UK broadband download and upload speeds have changed across the fastest nationally available fixed line ISPs and mobile operators over the past six months. Suffice to say, the growing coverage of gigabit-capable fixed line and 5G<\/a> networks continues to push performance.<\/p>\n

The result below stem from web-based speed testing by consumers and are thus inevitably impacted by a number of factors, such as the rising coverage of faster networks (e.g. full fibre and 5G<\/a>) and the associated level of take-up by customers. Due to this, it helps to understand any key changes in network deployments since the start of the year, and there have been a few (Ofcom’s data<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The increasingly rapid rollout of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP<\/a>) lines by more than a hundred different network operators (Summary of Full Fibre Build Progress<\/strong><\/a>) – particularly via Openreach<\/a> (BT<\/a>), CityFibre<\/a> and Virgin Media<\/a> (VMO2) – are currently what is driving all of the recent improvements in both full fibre and gigabit-capable coverage.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, some 73-82<\/span><\/span>% of premises can now get outdoor 5G<\/a> coverage from at least one operator (up from 67<\/span>-78<\/span><\/span>% at the end of 2022) and geographic coverage of 4G<\/a> networks across all operators sits on a range of 80-87% (largely unchanged).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sadly, we don’t have any recent take-up data from Ofcom<\/a> (they usually only release this once a year), but at the end of 2022 some 73% of UK consumers had adopted a fixed \u201csuperfast<\/em>\u201d (30Mbps+<\/strong>) connection, while 25% took a full fibre service and 38% had adopted gigabit connections.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> Speedtests can be affected by all sorts of issues, such as slow WiFi<\/a>, limitations of the tester itself, local network congestion and package choice (a lot of people will pick a slower and cheaper plan, even with 1Gbps available). The following results are thus only good for observing general market change over time and MUST NOT be taken as a reflection of ISP capability.<\/div>\n

Fastest Fixed Broadband ISPs (H1 2023 vs H2 2022)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The data in this report stems from Thinkbroadband<\/a>\u2019s independent speedtest database (inc. ISPreview\u2019s Broadband Speedtest<\/a><\/strong>). In the table below, we\u2019ve only included independent ISPs with strong national availability, but there is a separate table for smaller alternative networks on page 2 – these are difficult to include because they aren\u2019t yet available to the majority of premises and thus don\u2019t produce much test data.<\/p>\n

Naturally, there are caveats to consider with speedtest based studies like this, not least because such scores tend to be more reflective of take-up than network availability. For example, some ISPs may have a much larger proportion of customers on slower copper ADSL<\/a> or FTTC<\/a> lines and that can weigh against anybody on faster FTTP<\/a> or gigabit packages with the same provider (i.e. pulling average speeds down). The opposite can also be true.<\/p>\n

Overall, the average download speed<\/strong> of the top national providers was 127.81Mbps (up from 98.84Mbps six months ago) and the average upload speed<\/strong> hit 36.56Mbps (up from 24.91Mbps).<\/p>\n

The main change this time has been AAISP’s leap of several places to reach the top of the table, which most likely reflects the combination of several recent changes, such as last year’s launch of faster FTTP tiers on Openreach<\/a>’s national network and the more recent launch of several CityFibre<\/a> powered packages.<\/p>\n

A strong improvement was also seen by Plusnet<\/a>, which we suspect is down to last year’s launch of FTTP plans. But they currently remain hobbled by a large base of customers on slower copper-based broadband lines and the lack of a Digital Voice product may also make it harder for them to convert existing customers to full fibre users.<\/p>\n

Satellites
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Since early 2022 we’ve also been adding some results for SpaceX’s satellite<\/a> based Starlink<\/a> broadband service. Sadly, not enough data exists to include other satellite<\/a> platforms or providers.. yet. The good news is that Starlink<\/a>’s download speeds have, after an earlier fall, continued to improve. On the flip side, upload performance slid downward again.<\/p>\n

Now flick over to page 2 to see how the fastest full fibre alternative network (altnet) ISPs and mobile operators performed.<\/p>\n

Next we’ll examine how some of the more established alternative full fibre (FTTP)  network providers (AltNets) – those building their own separate broadband networks – perform when compared with the mainstream national players. Take note that Cityfibre<\/a> doesn’t have an entry because they’re supplied via various ISPs (e.g. Vodafone<\/a>, Zen, Giganet, TalkTalk<\/a>) and we can’t easily separate the data for them from other networks.<\/p>\n

Otherwise, the following providers don\u2019t suffer from the same performance woes as copper or hybrid fibre networks, thus we only focus our results on the top 10% (fastest) connections, which in most cases will reflect those consumers who take the fastest gigabit tier(s) available. The caveat is that these scores will still be heavily impacted by the same issues as mentioned earlier (slow Wi-Fi, local network congestion, take-up etc.).<\/p>\n

Ideally, all providers would publish their own internal speedtest data for each of their packages (i.e. to the customer’s router) to help us compare, but that would be expensive for some and require more action from Ofcom<\/a>.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> Most altnets only have comparatively niche coverage and limited speedtest data, which limits how many we can examine. Only ISPs with gigabit packages are included below.<\/div>\n

As before, it’s wise not to read too much into speed fluctuations above because the faster you go, the more obvious the caveats of web-based speed testing become. In addition, some provider’s only sell a 1Gbps package (i.e. the results aren’t impacted by slower tiers) and may have fewer customers (lower confidence in the data), which means apples-to-apples comparisons remain tricky.<\/p>\n

We intend to keep expanding this table as AltNets grow, which will in turn result in more data. But most of these providers are clearly delivering excellent performance. Gigaclear<\/a> showed the biggest improvement over the first half of 2023 (rising from 386.1Mbps to 511.3Mbps), while Fibrus<\/a> suffered the biggest fall (falling from 395.7Mbps to just 263.2Mbps). AltNet ISPs with “no data<\/em>” in H2 2022 above are all new additions.<\/p>\n

The Fastest Mobile Operators<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Mobile performance remains a difficult technology to study because end-users are always moving through different areas (indoor, outdoor, underground etc.), using different devices with different capabilities and the surrounding environment is ever changeable (weather, trees, buildings etc.). All of this can impact signal quality, and that’s before we even consider differences in network (backhaul) capacity or spectrum ownership.<\/p>\n

Suffice to say that studies of mobile broadband speed are inherently open to variation, but the top networks often tend to be those with a combination of the best 4G<\/a> or 5G coverage, a good amount of radio spectrum and the most advanced technologies.<\/p>\n

Overall, the average download speed<\/strong> of the four primary mobile operators was 47.37Mbps (up from 41.47Mbps six months ago) and the average upload speed<\/strong> hit 9.1Mbps (up from 7.55Mbps). Naturally, the rising coverage and take-up of 5G will now be having a positive impact on speeds, which follows a period of relative stagnation after the maturity of 4G<\/a> coverage.<\/p>\n

The biggest beneficiaries of the 5G bounce this time appear to be Three UK<\/a> and Vodafone<\/a>. By comparison both EE<\/a> and O2<\/a> (VMO2) seem to have actually suffered a decline in download performance, while their upload speeds have only improved by a small amount.<\/p>\n

We should point out that existing 5G networks remain hobbled by issues of limited coverage and legacy 4G services, although the gradual introduction of Standalone 5G (SA) networks may start to change that in the coming years (this will particularly improve upload and latency performance). Ofcom<\/a>’s plan to auction off more 5G spectrum in the mmW bands – 26GHz and 40GHz – is another event to keep an eye on (here<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
