{"id":34372,"date":"2023-05-04T16:32:33","date_gmt":"2023-05-04T15:32:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=34372"},"modified":"2023-05-05T15:07:55","modified_gmt":"2023-05-05T14:07:55","slug":"sky-stream-tv-customers-now-need-a-25mbps-broadband-speed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/05\/sky-stream-tv-customers-now-need-a-25mbps-broadband-speed.html","title":{"rendered":"Sky Stream TV Customers Now Need a 25Mbps Broadband Speed UPDATE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some customers of Sky&#8217;s standalone <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-209\" title=\"Sky Stream TV\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/skystream\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sky Stream<\/a> TV product, which uses your UK broadband ISP and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> connection to stream their on-demand video content and live TV channels directly to your existing TV set (without a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">satellite<\/a> dish), may be displeased to learn that you now need a much faster minimum download speed.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Until recently, Sky was stating that the new service would work with any broadband ISP, albeit with the caveat that &#8220;<em>all content on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/skyglass\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Glass<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/skystream\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Stream<\/a> is streamed via broadband, minimum speed of 10Mbps required<\/em>&#8221; (download). The <strong>10Mbps<\/strong> figure reflected their requirement for streaming in at least <strong>High Definition<\/strong> (HD) quality, while <strong>25Mbps<\/strong> was only recommended for those streaming in <strong>4K<\/strong>\/<strong>HDR<\/strong> and with <strong>Dolby Atmos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, the bad news is that Sky seems to have updated the small print on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/skystream\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Stream<\/a> product page, which now states this: &#8220;<em>All content on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/skyglass\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Glass<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/skystream\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Stream<\/a> is streamed via broadband, minimum speed of 25mbps required<\/em>.&#8221; In addition, they&#8217;ve also raised the recommended speed for those streaming in 4K\/HDR and with Dolby Atmos from 25Mbps to <strong>30Mbps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Both changes appear to have occurred in the past month, since the original speed requirements still existed when we last checked at the start of April 2023. Sky hasn&#8217;t said why they&#8217;ve made the change, although we suspect it may be a way of managing expectations and reducing complaints from those on slower lines. But it&#8217;s unclear what this means for those on 10-24Mbps capable lines who already have the service.<\/p>\n<p>One issue with this is that, as video codecs evolve, it will soon become possible to squeeze a full 4K and HDR video into a sub-10Mbps stream. But that would of course depend upon Sky adopting such standards, which seems unlikely to happen anytime soon. We&#8217;ve asked Sky to clarify why they&#8217;ve made the change and what it may mean for existing customers within the unsupported performance range (expect an update later &#8211; probably tomorrow).<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 5th May 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sky has confirmed that the information is correct, it has increased the recommended minimum speed to 25Mbps for both Sky Stream and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/skyglass\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Glass<\/a>, apparently so customers can have the best possible experience.
