{"id":3496,"date":"2013-06-14T08:03:59","date_gmt":"2013-06-14T07:03:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=3496"},"modified":"2013-06-14T08:08:55","modified_gmt":"2013-06-14T07:08:55","slug":"cumbria-uk-reveals-tentative-51m-superfast-broadband-rollout-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/06\/cumbria-uk-reveals-tentative-51m-superfast-broadband-rollout-plan.html","title":{"rendered":"Cumbria UK Reveals Tentative \u00a351m BT Superfast Broadband Rollout Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The \u00a351m <a href=\"http:\/\/www.connectingcumbria.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Connecting Cumbria<\/a> project, which will use a mix of public and private funding to help expand the reach of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s superfast fibre broadband (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>\/P) services to over 93% of the English county by the end of 2015 (last 7% to get at least 2Mbps), has detailed its preliminary telephone exchange upgrade plan.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The contract, which was first signed last November (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/11\/bt-details-its-superfast-broadband-isp-roll-out-plan-for-cumbria-uk.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>), is funded by \u00a317.1m from the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bduk\" target=\"_blank\">Broadband Delivery UK<\/a> (BDUK) office, \u00a313.7m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and \u00a315m from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>. Sadly the scheme then had to wait half a year for Europe to give it the final stage of <strong>Major Projects Approval<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/05\/europe-approves-gbp51m-superfast-broadband-bduk-rollout-in-cumbria-uk.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Happily we now know that the first locations (<strong>Tranche \/ Phase 1<\/strong>) to benefit from the upgrades will include Carlisle, Penrith, Maryport, Workington, Dalton-in-Furness and Ulverston by <strong>31st December 2013<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But upgrading exchanges is only part of the battle as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s up to 80Mbps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> technology will also require hundreds of local <strong>street cabinets<\/strong> to either be replaced\/upgraded or new ones installed and this can often take several months to complete.<\/p>\n<p>The next <strong>phase 2<\/strong> exchange upgrades are expected to commence from early next year and are still subject to &#8220;<em>detailed design work<\/em>&#8221; that could impact on the planned launch dates\/cabinet coverage.
