{"id":35021,"date":"2023-07-12T10:18:03","date_gmt":"2023-07-12T09:18:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=35021"},"modified":"2023-07-12T10:22:16","modified_gmt":"2023-07-12T09:22:16","slug":"cityfibre-start-42m-fttp-broadband-build-in-south-tyneside","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/07\/cityfibre-start-42m-fttp-broadband-build-in-south-tyneside.html","title":{"rendered":"CityFibre Start \u00a342m FTTP Broadband Build in South Tyneside"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Network operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/cityfibre\" target=\"_blank\">CityFibre<\/a> has today announced that they&#8217;ve finally entered the construction phase of their \u00a342 million project to deploy a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> \/ XGS-PON) broadband network across South Tyneside (Tyne and Wear) in North East England. The operator is already working in neighbouring Gateshead.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The first building work &#8211; supported by local contractor <strong>GCU UK Ltd<\/strong> &#8211; is taking place in the Laygate area of the town. In the Dean Road area, recent path reinstatement works led by the Council and full fibre installation by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/cityfibre\" target=\"_blank\">CityFibre<\/a> have also been combined to minimise disruption and the need for separate works.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/cityfibre\" target=\"_blank\">Cityfibre<\/a> is supported by ISPs such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/zen_internet\" target=\"_blank\">Zen Internet<\/a>, Giganet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/idnet\" target=\"_blank\">iDNET<\/a>, and others, but they aren\u2019t all live or available in every location yet.<\/div>\n<p>The work forms part of the operator&#8217;s wider ambition to cover up to 8 million UK premises (funded by c.\u00a32.4bn in equity and c.\u00a34.9bn debt) \u2013 across over 285 cities, towns and villages (c.30% of the UK) \u2013 by the end of 2025 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/03\/cityfibre-name-279-uk-areas-for-4bn-gigabit-broadband-rollout.html\">here<\/a>). CityFibre has so far passed 2.8 million homes (up from 2.6m in late March 2023), but only 2.4 million of those are currently considered to be fully <em>Ready for Service<\/em> by an ISP (up from 2.3m).<\/p>\n<p>The project is expected to be completed by 2025, but the first services will typically start to go live for people to take advantage of much sooner. But it does have to be said that Cityfibre aren&#8217;t exactly the fastest alternative network provider when it comes to putting their network live, post-build.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Steph Carter-Smith, CityFibre\u2019s Partnership Manager for South Tyneside, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our full fibre rollout is continuing to gain momentum across the North East, and we are excited to see our plans now progressing in South Tyneside. Delivering lightning-fast and reliable broadband to homes and businesses across the area is a huge undertaking, but once the network is built, it will serve the community\u2019s increasing connectivity needs for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>We have been working with our build partner GCU for many years, and know that they will deliver the project quickly, with as little disruption as possible to residents. I would like to thank the local community for their patience as we work to make South Tyneside a leader in digital connectivity.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In terms of local gigabit-capable competition, it&#8217;s worth noting that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> (VMO2) will be CityFibre&#8217;s main competitor in this area. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> does have some growing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> coverage, but it&#8217;s still at a fairly low level.
