{"id":35469,"date":"2023-08-18T11:55:12","date_gmt":"2023-08-18T10:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=35469"},"modified":"2023-08-18T11:55:12","modified_gmt":"2023-08-18T10:55:12","slug":"ofcom-uk-propose-more-28ghz-spectrum-to-boost-satellite-broadband","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/08\/ofcom-uk-propose-more-28ghz-spectrum-to-boost-satellite-broadband.html","title":{"rendered":"Ofcom UK Propose More 28GHz Spectrum to Boost Satellite Broadband"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK telecoms and media regulator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>, has today proposed to make 448MHz of the spectrum frequency in the 28GHz band (27.5\u201330GHz) available to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">satellite<\/a> broadband services, specifically their Earth station gateways, which could help to boost data speeds and further expand coverage into remote communities.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Parts of the <strong>28GHz<\/strong> band are already allocated to a mix of fixed wireless and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">satellite<\/a> uses under two different authorisations. But earlier this year the regulator agreed to vary the national 28GHz Spectrum Access licence held by <strong>Arqiva<\/strong> at its request, to limit the scope of its licence to only authorise use of this spectrum at three locations until July 2026, which resulted in the return to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> of 448MHz of &#8220;<em>unassigned spectrum<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> (VMO2), UK Broadband, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> are some of the band&#8217;s current licensees.<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> now wants to make both the unassigned spectrum and the four &#8220;<em>guard bands<\/em>&#8221; (usually used as a separator to prevent interference between users), in the 28GHz spectrum band, available to Non-geostationary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">satellite<\/a> (NGSO) Earth station gateways and Geostationary satellite (GSO) gateways (Permanent Earth stations &#8211; PES). This could be of particular benefit to satellite broadband operators, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/starlink\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/oneweb\" target=\"_blank\">OneWeb<\/a> etc.<\/p>\n<p>Satellite gateways are typically placed at single sites and will thus only have a limited effect on other users, which means there&#8217;s still scope for other users to share access to this spectrum in the future, and Ofcom will consult on that toward the end of 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, Ofcom&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/consultations-and-statements\/category-2\/expanding-spectrum-access-for-satellite-gateways-in-the-28-ghz-band\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consultation<\/a> will run until 29th September 2023, and they then plan to publish their decision during the autumn.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UK telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to make 448MHz of the spectrum frequency in the 28GHz band (27.5\u201330GHz) available to satellite broadband services, specifically their Earth station gateways, which could help to boost data speeds and further expand coverage into remote communities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":27481,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[36,77],"class_list":["post-35469","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-ofcom-regulation","tag-satellite"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.3 -
