But first they&#8217;ll have to find an initial \u00a310 million.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The idea would apparently be to target the most remote rural areas, which <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-145\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"BT\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s own network could leave neglected. At present <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-145\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"BT\">BT<\/a> aims to cover 66% of the UK via its own \u00a32.5bn commercial investment by spring 2014, although this is expected to hit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/05\/confusion-as-bt-put-90-uk-fibre-broadband-goal-back-from-2017-to-2020.html\" target=\"_blank\">90% by 2017 or 2020<\/a> with support from the government&#8217;s \u00a3830m <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-66 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bduk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"building digital uk\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/building-digital-uk\">Broadband Delivery UK<\/a> (BDUK) budget (plus an extra \u00a31bn from BT itself).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Jonas Birgersson, Founder of ViaEuropa, said (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/finance\/newsbysector\/mediatechnologyandtelecoms\/telecoms\/10136770\/BT-faces-competition-over-rural-broadband.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Telegraph<\/a>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>[The United Kingdom] has to put up with one of the most limited and limiting broadband infrastructures in the developed world. We aim to help fix that<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Unfortunately the article is less clear about where all this money would come from. The Broadway Partners website claims to &#8220;<em>specialise in bringing together communities, industry and the public sector to deliver a funded and sustainable broadband solution<\/em>&#8221; and points to a crowd-funded model through the <a href=\"http:\/\/fundthegap.com\" target=\"_blank\">FundTheGap<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<p>However related projects (e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/11\/first-fibre-ducts-laid-as-cotswold-broadband-target-9000-oxfordshire-premises.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cotswolds Broadband<\/a>) still seem to be a long way from achieving the necessary investment and hitting a target of<strong> \u00a310 million<\/strong> could prove to be a tough uphill struggle. As a start it would be nice to see the scheme releasing more information about its intended coverage,\u00a0targets and expectations.<\/p>\n<p>People tend to only invest if they know whether or not they&#8217;re in an area that could benefit. The community supported <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-49 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/b4rn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"Broadband 4 the Rural North\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/b4rn.org.uk\">B4RN<\/a> project in Lancashire is a good example of how to gain publicity and support. But one huge challenge for a lot of similar schemes is being able to know where BT won\u2019t upgrade, which is apparently still <strong>confidential information<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/06\/last-10-uncertainty-still-hampering-investment-in-uk-rural-broadband.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Broadway Partners and Swedish fibre optic developer ViaEuropa have teamed up to promote the creation of an alternative &#8220;open access&#8221; superfast broadband network in rural parts of Devon, Dorset and the Cotswolds (England).
