{"id":36003,"date":"2023-10-17T10:01:56","date_gmt":"2023-10-17T09:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=36003"},"modified":"2023-10-13T15:28:29","modified_gmt":"2023-10-13T14:28:29","slug":"broadband-isp-ogi-boost-data-capacity-to-wales-via-new-fibre-route","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/10\/broadband-isp-ogi-boost-data-capacity-to-wales-via-new-fibre-route.html","title":{"rendered":"Broadband ISP Ogi Boost Data Capacity to Wales via New Fibre Route"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alternative network builder and broadband ISP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/spectruminternet\" target=\"_blank\">Ogi<\/a>, which is being backed by Infracapital to help deploy a multi-Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) network across South Wales, has today announced that they&#8217;ve nearly completed Phase One of a new diverse fibre route into Wales that will boost data capacity and resilience.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The operator has so far covered a total of 60,000 premises with their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> network \u2013 most of them residential \u2013 in Wales up to July 2023 (up from 47,500 in March 2023) and they&#8217;ve also added 6,000 customers \u201c<em>in less than a year<\/em>\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/07\/ogi-passes-60000-premises-in-wales-with-fttp-broadband.html\">here<\/a>). But at the same time they&#8217;ve also been running a privately-backed project to bring new high-capacity connectivity and route diversity to Wales.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/spectruminternet\" target=\"_blank\">Ogi<\/a> employs over 210 staff, is currently being backed by an investment of \u00a3200m and aims to cover 150,000 premises with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> in South Wales by 2025.<\/div>\n<p>A new concession agreement held between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/welshgov\" target=\"_blank\">Welsh Government<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/spectruminternet\" target=\"_blank\">Ogi<\/a> is set to see the Welsh infrastructure provider bring new <strong>Dark Fibre<\/strong> and <strong>Microduct access<\/strong> products into the South East region of Wales, boosting capacity and resilience for the likes of carriers, hyper-scalers, datacentres and rival ISPs looking to expand across Wales, England and Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Utilising the public-owned motorway and trunk road network, Ogi is installing a new diverse route into Wales over the Prince of Wales Bridge, into Europe\u2019s largest datacentre campus &#8211; <strong>Vantage CWL1<\/strong> &#8211; and onwards to key hubs such as Cardiff\u2019s Empire exchange in the capital\u2019s Stadium House.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Ben Allwright, Ogi&#8217;s Chief Executive Officer, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith established datacentres \u2013 like Newport\u2019s Vantage \u2013 and increasing interest from data hungry sectors like fintech looking to scale in Wales, now\u2019s the time to bring this diversity and high-capacity resilience into south Wales.<\/p>\n<p>The big data age is here. With our data consumption set to double every two years, there\u2019s a need for more datacentres, more capacity and, ultimately, a resilient product network that can carry it all. This unique contract between Ogi and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/welshgov\" target=\"_blank\">Welsh Government<\/a> is the very bedrock of Wales\u2019s digital revolution; a high-capacity, diverse route, capable of moving data fast and reliably, side-by-side with bringing highly skilled jobs and greater prosperity to Wales.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The move will also help Ogi to support its existing services, which in some areas can even offer connections as fast as 25Gbps via Nokia\u2019s next generation 25G Passive Optical Network (25G PON) fibre technology (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/12\/ogi-become-first-uk-isp-to-deploy-nokias-25gbps-full-fibre-tech.html\">here<\/a>). Ogi will initially offer dark fibre and microduct products ready for service in early 2024. Future phases of the scheme could see infrastructure reaching the west coast of Wales, supporting carriers and hyper-scalers to reach international subsea fibre connections.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the network itself. Ogi informed ISPreview that Phase One of the TRC programme rollout has the capacity for over 1,500 pairs of fibres, with each pairing capable of 1.6Tbps (Terabits) of data using commercially available products such as those from Ciena and Nokia.
