{"id":36460,"date":"2023-11-30T13:41:25","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T13:41:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=36460"},"modified":"2023-11-30T16:51:43","modified_gmt":"2023-11-30T16:51:43","slug":"openreach-extend-uk-1-2gbps-and-1-8gbps-fttp-pilot-into-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/11\/openreach-extend-uk-1-2gbps-and-1-8gbps-fttp-pilot-into-2024.html","title":{"rendered":"Openreach Extend UK 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps FTTP Pilot into 2024 UPDATE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Network access provider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>) has just announced that their ISP pilot of faster Fibre-to-the-Premises (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) broadband tiers, which pushes top download speeds to 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps (both offer 120Mbps upstream), has been extended yet again until 29th February 2024.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The original pilot started in December 2022 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/11\/openreach-launch-pilot-of-1-2gbps-and-1-8gbps-fttp-broadband-tiers.html\">here<\/a>) and was due to run until 31st March 2023, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> later extended it to run until 31st July 2023 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/03\/openreach-extend-uk-pilot-of-1-2gbps-and-1-8gbps-fttp-broadband.html\">here<\/a>) and at the same time expanded the availability of the tiers from their<strong> Swansea<\/strong> (Wales) exchange to also include exchanges in <strong>Ipswich<\/strong> (Suffolk). After that, they extended it again to 30th September 2023 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/06\/openreach-uk-extends-fttp-pilot-of-1-2gbps-and-1-8gbps-broadband-again.html\">here<\/a>) and added various exchanges in <strong>Northern Ireland<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> The operator\u2019s \u00a315bn full fibre network currently covers over 12 million premises and aims to reach 25m by December 2026 (80%+ of the UK).<\/div>\n<p>However, once September arrived, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> were quick to extend the pilot yet again for another three months until<strong> 31st December 2023<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/09\/openreach-uk-extend-pilot-of-1-2gbps-and-1-8gbps-fttp-to-end-of-2023.html\">here<\/a>). The operator never clarified if there had been any changes, but we know they extended its availability nationwide because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> recently became the first ISP to launch a package (1.6Gbps) based off the new tier (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/10\/ee-becomes-bts-main-uk-broadband-brand-launch-1-6gb-fttp.html\">here<\/a>) &#8211; most providers usually wait until post-pilot to launch.<\/p>\n<p>The bad news today is that Openreach has issued another vague update (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.openreach.co.uk\/cpportal\/updates\/briefings\/ultrafast\/nga202423\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>), which extends the pilot for another couple of months until <strong>29th February 2024<\/strong>. We are currently trying to clarify the reason for this latest extension and will report back in due course, hopefully sometime this afternoon. But it may be because they need to test with a minimum number of live circuits before completing the pilot (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>&#8217;s package may help).<\/p>\n<p>The service, once out of pilot, will be accompanied by two new optical modems (ONT \/ ONU) \u2013 the <strong>Nokia G-010G-T<\/strong> and <strong>ADTRAN SDX 611Q<\/strong> (pictured), both with 2.5Gbps <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-103 shortlink-chref\" title=\"Local Area Network\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/lan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/jargon\/jargon_detail.php?LAN---Local-Area-Network-50\">LAN<\/a> \/ Ethernet ports. So even if you already have an ONT from Openreach, then those who order one of these faster tiers will attract another engineer visit to put the new kit into place. ISPs will also need to supply more capable routers.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the challenge is that Openreach currently use a <strong>Gigabit Passive Optical Network<\/strong> (GPON), which places limitations on how fast they can go before capacity becomes an issue. GPON supports a capacity on each trunk line of up to 2.5Gbps downstream and 1.24Gbps upstream, which needs to be shared between several premises. This makes what they\u2019re trying to do a bit harder, especially given their strong take-up (currently 33%).<\/p>\n<p>At present the fastest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> download tier available to consumers on their network is 1Gbps (115Mbps upload for homes and 220Mbps for business lines) and those GPON limitations are the main reason why Openreach may not wish to push uploads much beyond what already exists. The operator did once have a plan to adopt 10Gbps capable <strong>XGS-PON<\/strong> technology, but they\u2019ve been silent on that for a long time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 1:49pm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just a small detail, but it&#8217;s worth noting that premises covered by Openreach&#8217;s now somewhat ancient ECI kit (mostly a few tens of thousands of premises in places like Cornwall) are not yet able to access the new tiers.
