Network access provider Openreach<\/a> (BT<\/a>) has today revealed the next batch of 142 new locations to benefit from their ongoing deployment of a new multi-Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP<\/a>) broadband ISP network, which has just officially reached the half-way point by covering over 12.5 million UK premises.<\/p>\n

The rollout, which is expected to cost up to \u00a315bn and – as above – has already covered 12.5m UK premises (inc. 3.6m homes in the hardest to reach rural areas), is currently running at a build rate of c.60,000 premises per week<\/strong>. More than 4 million customers have also already adopted the service via various different ISPs (30k new orders every week), which gives the operator a strong take-up rate of 33%.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> Openreach<\/a>\u2019s goal is to reach 25 million premises (80%+ of the UK) by December 2026 \u2013 6.2m of those being targeted are in rural and semi-rural areas (here<\/a>). But they also hold an aspiration to reach up to 30m premises by 2030.<\/div>\n

The latest announcement means that around 3,000 towns, cities, boroughs, villages and hamlets are now included in the company\u2019s build programme. The 142 new locations being announced today cover around 1.4 million additional homes and businesses, including in some of the hardest to reach, most rural communities in the UK, as well as a few urban locations.<\/p>\n

For example, some of the new exchanges include York, Crawley (West Sussex), Portsmouth Central, Clydebank, Summertown (Oxford) and many more. We’ve included a full list at the bottom of this article, as well as an infographic.<\/p>\n

Clive Selley, CEO of Openreach<\/a>, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a national infrastructure project that\u2019s a genuine success story. We\u2019re delivering engineering on an epic scale, on time and on budget \u2013 and that\u2019s thanks to a supportive policy environment which has led to huge investment and competition throughout the UK\u2019s telecoms sector.<\/p>\n

From a standing start just a few years ago, we\u2019ve now made this life-changing technology available to 12.5 million premises and counting and we\u2019re building faster than any operator I\u2019m aware of in Europe.<\/p>\n

Our build rate is still accelerating and it\u2019ll take us half the time to reach our next 12.5 million. But we won\u2019t be stopping there. Ultimately, we\u2019ll reach up to 30 million premises by the end of the decade – unlocking a raft of economic and social benefits by supporting new models of commerce, healthcare and public services.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Openreach\u2019s website is currently in the process of being updated to reflect the latest changes, including via their map and their latest build plan<\/a>. The operator typically aims to update the build information on their website at a minimum of every 3 months to adjust timings and add new locations as necessary.<\/p>\n

The service itself, once live, can be ordered via various ISPs, such as BT<\/a>, Sky Broadband<\/a>, TalkTalk<\/a>, Vodafone<\/a> and many more (Openreach FTTP ISP Choices<\/strong><\/a>) \u2013 it is not currently an automatic upgrade, although some ISPs (e.g. TalkTalk<\/a>) have now started to do free automatic upgrades as older copper-based services and lines are slowly withdrawn.<\/p>\n

However, Openreach\u2019s commercial build will still leave some premises unserved by their full fibre network, although many of those should hopefully be tackled by alternative network providers (as is already the case in quite a few areas). The Government\u2019s \u00a35bn Project Gigabit<\/a><\/strong> will also attempt to help fill the gaps.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> Build lists are tentative, which means that some locations may be removed (e.g. if found to be too expensive due to complications) or delayed and others added. Openreach has not yet completed their rollout plan, so more updates will follow in the future. Inclusion should NOT be considered as equating to 100% coverage of each area.<\/div>\n
