{"id":36705,"date":"2024-01-03T17:19:10","date_gmt":"2024-01-03T17:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=36705"},"modified":"2024-01-04T07:15:58","modified_gmt":"2024-01-04T07:15:58","slug":"full-fibre-uk-isp-truespeed-fined-34k-for-sloppy-street-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/01\/full-fibre-uk-isp-truespeed-fined-34k-for-sloppy-street-works.html","title":{"rendered":"Full Fibre UK ISP Truespeed Fined \u00a334k for Sloppy Street Works UPDATE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alternative network builder and ISP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/truespeed\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Truespeed<\/a>, which has spent the past few years deploying their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a>) broadband network to homes in the South West of England, has reportedly been hit with \u00a334,000 worth of fines and charges for roadworks offences in Somerset.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The operator&#8217;s rural full fibre network, which is mostly focused upon serving premises in parts of Devon, Wiltshire and Somerset in England, has so far covered 91,000 premises (RFS) and they\u2019re home to over 17,000 customers (data from 15th August 2023).<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> The operator is funded by a total investment of \u00a3175m from <strong>Aviva<\/strong>, some \u00a3134m of which has already been committed to physical builds.<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/truespeed\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Truespeed<\/a> also previously held an \u201c<em>ambitious<\/em>\u201d overall target of reaching <strong>500,000 properties<\/strong> by the end of 2026. But that may need to be updated after worsening market conditions meant they suffered both redundancies and a slowdown of their build toward the latter part of 2023 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/08\/job-losses-strike-uk-full-fibre-isp-truespeed-as-build-expected-to-slow.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the operator has now been hit by some more bad news after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.somerset.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Somerset Council<\/a> prosecuted them for works carried out in <strong>Frome<\/strong> and <strong>Street<\/strong> during late July 2023. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theconstructionindex.co.uk\/news\/view\/broadband-firm-fined-for-sloppy-streetworks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the construction index<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/truespeed\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Truespeed<\/a> admitted 5 breaches of the <strong>New Roads and Street Works Act 1991<\/strong> (under section 65) \u2013 primarily failing to install proper traffic management and guarding for excavated road surfaces to ensure the safety of pedestrians.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Simon Wall, Truespeed\u2019s Chief Network Development Officer, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTruespeed takes health and safety compliance very seriously. This work was carried out by a sub-contractor of Truespeed who were not following the proper procedures that we have in place. As a result, we have ceased all work with this contractor until such time they can demonstrate they are able to meet our health and safety standards.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Taunton magistrates ultimately imposed fines totally \u00a328,000, as well as costs of \u00a34,277 and a victim surcharge of \u00a32,000.
