{"id":36708,"date":"2024-01-04T08:34:53","date_gmt":"2024-01-04T08:34:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=36708"},"modified":"2024-01-04T08:37:50","modified_gmt":"2024-01-04T08:37:50","slug":"starlink-launch-first-6-leo-broadband-satellites-for-mobile-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/01\/starlink-launch-first-6-leo-broadband-satellites-for-mobile-service.html","title":{"rendered":"Starlink Launch First 6 LEO Broadband Satellites for Mobile Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SpaceX has moved a step closer to introducing a global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> mobile service via <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-188\" title=\"Starlink Satellite Broadband\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/starlink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Starlink<\/a>&#8216;s mega constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which occurred after the company successfully launched its first six satellites with support for their new &#8216;Direct to Cell&#8217; product this week.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/starlink\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a> network currently has around <strong>5,289 LEO satellites<\/strong> in orbit around the Earth (altitude of c. 500km+) and they have approval to add roughly 7,500 more by the end of 2027. Customers in the UK pay from \u00a375 a month, plus \u00a3449 for the regular home kit (standard dish, router etc.) and \u00a320 for shipping on the \u2018Standard\u2019 package, which promises fast latency times of 25-50ms, downloads of c. 25-100Mbps and uploads of c. 5-10Mbps.<\/p>\n<p>However, in 2022 the space firm signed the starting gun on a new agreement (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/08\/starlinks-leo-satellites-to-deliver-4g-and-5g-mobile-from-space.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2022\/12\/starlink-details-data-speed-of-its-space-based-4g-mobile-network.html\">here<\/a>), which will enable them to launch a global space-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> mobile network &#8211; called <a href=\"https:\/\/direct.starlink.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Direct to Cell<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; to connect with regular unmodified Smartphones on the ground. Satellites with this capability have an advanced <strong>eNodeB<\/strong> modem onboard that acts like a cellphone tower in space, allowing network integration similar to a standard roaming partner.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the company proposed to launch their first beta test product in select areas of the USA by the end of 2023 (i.e. continental US, Hawaii, parts of Alaska, Puerto Rico and their territorial water), which is being supported by mobile operator <strong>T-Mobile<\/strong>. But this is running a little behind schedule because SpaceX has only this week launched the first batch of 6 Direct to Cell capable Starlinks, which were lofted alongside a batch of 15 other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/starlink\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a> birds aboard a <strong>Falcon 9 rocket<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX envisages that the testing phase will eventually involve 840 satellites transmitting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> mobile to around 2,000 unmodified Smartphones on the ground. According to the company&#8217;s website, the plan is still to launch a basic TEXT (i.e. SMS, MMS and \u201c<em>participating messaging apps<\/em>\u201c) service sometime in 2024, while the ability to make calls (voice) and use a slow mobile broadband (data) link won\u2019t follow until sometime in 2025.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" style=\"padding: 0px; width: 100%; border-radius: 4px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2023-article-illustrations\/starlink-diagram-v2-direct-to-cell.png\" alt=\"starlink-diagram-v2-direct-to-cell\"><\/p>\n<p>The ability to connect to <strong>Internet of Things<\/strong> (IoT) devices also won\u2019t follow until sometime in 2025. In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/starlink\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a> doesn\u2019t yet have supporting access agreements for this service with cellular providers in every country, although hopefully we\u2019ll soon learn which operator might support it in the UK. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>) seem like fair bets, since both have experience working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">satellite<\/a> solutions and are testing rival systems.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Starlink&#8217;s Global Direct to Cell Partners<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nT-Mobile (USA)<br \/>\nOptus (Australia)<br \/>\nRogers (Canada)<br \/>\nOne NZ (New Zealand)<br \/>\nKDDI (Japan)<br \/>\nSalt (Switzerland)<br \/>\nENTEL (CHILE)<br \/>\nEntel (PERU)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But <strong>Elon Musk<\/strong> has cautioned (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1742396904619581642\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>) that the first Direct to Cell capable Starlinks can only support data speeds of &#8220;<span class=\"css-1qaijid r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\"><em>~7Mb per beam and the beams are very big, so while this is a great solution for locations with no cellular connectivity, it is not meaningfully competitive with existing terrestrial cellular networks<\/em>.<\/span>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Related <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SawyerMerritt\/status\/1600596763030786066\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documents<\/a> released last year revealed that the Direct to Cell system will be able to provide \u201c<em>theoretical peak speeds of up to either<\/em>\u201d 3Mbps or 7.2Mbps peak upload (Earth-to-Space) over 1.4MHz or 5MHz bandwidth channels per beam, respectively, and up to either 4.4Mbps or 18.3Mbps on the downlink (Space-to-Earth) over the same bandwidth channels per beam using LTE (4G) technology.<\/p>\n<p>However, we still don\u2019t know how much it will cost to add this kind of global roaming, which will need to be competitive with traditional roaming services. On top of that, SpaceX are facing some challenges to their plans in the USA due to concerns about spectrum interference, not least from AT&amp;T (they\u2019re testing a rival solution via AST SpaceMobile) and Omnispace.
