Hampshire-based network builder and gigabit broadband ISP, toob<\/a>, which is both rolling out its own full fibre (FTTP<\/a>) network and also sharing some of CityFibre<\/a>’s similar infrastructure in parts of South England, has today announced a number of related expansions into Waterlooville (own build) and Chichester & Bognor Regis (City Fibre).<\/p>\n

Just to recap. Toob<\/a> was originally backed by \u00a375m<\/strong> from the Amber Infrastructure Group (here<\/a>) and \u201cup to<\/em>\u201d \u00a387.5m<\/strong> from the Sequoia Economic Infrastructure Income Fund (here<\/a>). During 2023 the operator also secured \u00a3160m<\/strong> of additional funding (debt financing) from Ares Management<\/strong>\u2018s Infrastructure Debt strategy (here<\/a>) \u2013 this can be upsized to \u00a3300m<\/strong> over time to support growth.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/strong> Toob<\/a>\u2019s fibre covers 150,000 premises (not all RFS) and they have 20,000 customers (c. 95% on their own network). The operator aims to cover 1 million premises across parts of Dorset, Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex by 2027 (e.g. Southampton, Camberley, Aldershot, Farnborough, Fareham and Gosport etc.).<\/div>\n

As mentioned above, toob both builds its own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP<\/a>) infrastructure and holds a complementary network partnership with CityFibre<\/a> to help expand their coverage (CF also gains reciprocal access to harness toob’s network). In that respect, today’s news technically reflects two separate announcements.<\/p>\n

The first is their \u00a38m<\/strong> investment to roll-out to 20,000 premises<\/strong> in the Hampshire town of Waterlooville<\/strong> (construction is due to start within the “coming months<\/em>“). This seems like a good target since, at present, the only major gigabit-capable network in the town is Virgin Media<\/a> (VMO2), while Openreach<\/a> only has a small level of FTTP<\/a> coverage and doesn’t currently plan to expand much upon that.<\/p>\n

The second announcement is their expansion to serve thousands of homes across Chichester<\/strong> and Bognor Regis<\/strong> in West Sussex, albeit in partnership with CityFibre<\/a>’s existing FTTP network, rather than via their own fibre build.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re excited to be working with toob as they extend their services over our networks in Chichester and Bognor Regis. toob are an exciting and innovative partner and it\u2019s great to see them expand their offering to even more homes across the South.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

No matter which side of toob’s network you’re on, customers of the service typically pay just \u00a325 per month on an 18-month term for their 900Mbps (symmetric speed) package (\u00a329 thereafter), which includes a router, unlimited usage, free installation and a pledge of \u201cno in-contract price rises<\/em>\u201c.<\/p>\n
