The latest anecdotal monthly study of fixed line consumer broadband ISP speeds in the United Kingdom has revealed that the average internet download speed during July 2013 was 18.662Mbps, which is up from 18.365Mbps in June. By contrast the average upload speed hit 3.338Mbps (up from 2.882Mbps in June).<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This month the Broadband.co.uk sourced data\u00a0saw PlusNet<\/a> overtake Sky Broadband<\/a> for overall download performance and return to the top three after a brief dip. But otherwise the table remains broadly unchanged over June 2013 (here<\/a>) and Virgin Media<\/a> seems to be settling in at the top with a speed that tends to hover around 38Mbps.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile BT<\/a> improved its upload performance to both retain the top spot and crack the 5Mbps milestone.<\/p>\n

Disclaimer: Always take anecdotal data like this with a big pinch of salt. Every home is different and performance can be affected by all sorts of issues, many of which are beyond the ISPs ability to control. We do not consider the above data to be a reliable barometer for individual users but it can be used to highlight other changes in the market.<\/p>\n

On top of that the faster speeds from the latest \u201csuperfast<\/em>\u201d technologies (FTTC<\/a>, FTTP<\/a> etc.) can have a very disproportionate impact compared with the older and often significantly slower copper-based ADSL2+ services that are still used by most homes. Sadly the table doesn\u2019t include smaller ISPs because they don\u2019t produce enough data.<\/p>\n
