{"id":37363,"date":"2024-02-28T10:03:59","date_gmt":"2024-02-28T10:03:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=37363"},"modified":"2024-02-29T07:29:54","modified_gmt":"2024-02-29T07:29:54","slug":"government-quietly-scrap-main-uk-gigabit-broadband-voucher-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/02\/government-quietly-scrap-main-uk-gigabit-broadband-voucher-site.html","title":{"rendered":"Government Quietly Scrap Main UK Gigabit Broadband Voucher Site UPDATE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bduk\" target=\"_blank\">Building Digital UK<\/a> (BDUK) agency appears to have scrapped the relatively user-friendly website for their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/gbvs\" target=\"_blank\">Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme<\/a> (GBVS), which instead redirects interested consumers and businesses to a somewhat less user-friendly GOV.UK information page that lacks even a simple availability checker.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Just to recap. The GBVS generally offers grants worth <strong>up to \u00a34,500<\/strong> for rural homes and businesses to help them get a gigabit-capable broadband (1Gbps) ISP service installed, which is available to areas with speeds of \u201c<em>less than 100Mbps<\/em>\u201d \u2013 assuming there are also no near-term plans for a gigabit deployment in the same area (either via private investment or state-aid). Some Local Authorities (LA) have also provided top-up funding to boost the voucher values, enabling them to reach some increasingly remote areas.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> The GBVS is currently being supported by an investment of \u00a3210m via the wider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2021\/03\/gov-starts-gbp5bn-uk-gigabit-broadband-and-voucher-schemes.html\"><strong>\u00a35bn Project Gigabit<\/strong><\/a> programme.<\/div>\n<p>However, the GBVS has admittedly faced a rocky few years, not least due to the clash with Project Gigabit&#8217;s wider gigabit subsidy programme (i.e. awarding wider state-aid build contracts to network operators) and various internal process changes. Both schemes focus on the same sort of rural areas (final 20% of poorly served premises), which can make for a difficult bit of juggling to avoid duplicating public investment. But the subsidy contracts \/ procurements usually seem to take precedence.<\/p>\n<p>According to our sources, BDUK informed network operators a couple of weeks ago that they had launched a new website for the GBVS. But the problem is that the new site is less of a dedicated front-end for the voucher programme and more of a wordy information page on the general GOV.UK site.<\/p>\n<p>Gone is the clean and simple front-end, as well as any semblance of an availability checker to help simplify the process. Instead, visitors will now need to wade through several pages\u2019 worth of text (user-friendly, it is not), before being able to figure out how to even apply (you have to approach a registered supplier for your region).<\/p>\n<p>The only positive is that BDUK now includes a semi-useful little map, which perhaps ironically helps to highlight the current caveats of the GBVS scheme by visualising which parts of the UK are actually open for new voucher projects. The answer is, not many \u2013 it&#8217;s been suspended in most areas to avoid clashing with the aforementioned Project Gigabit procurements.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>GBVS Availability Map<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" style=\"padding: 0px; width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2024-article-illustrations\/Project-Gigabit-Voucher-Availability-Map.webp\" alt=\"Project-Gigabit-Voucher-Availability-Map\"><\/p>\n<p>Suffice to say, it&#8217;s hard to shake the feeling that the government doesn&#8217;t really seem to care much about the voucher scheme right now. If they did, then we&#8217;d like to think they&#8217;d be putting a lot more effort into making it easier to use, rather than going in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n<p>The change also makes it difficult for people, as well as ourselves, to check whether specific locations are covered by a pre-existing deployment plan. We&#8217;ve asked BDUK\/DSIT for a comment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 29th Feb 2024 @ 7:24am<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve had a response from the government.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>A DSIT spokesperson said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn response to feedback from suppliers, the voucher scheme is now administered through a new, improved platform which is more efficient and offers a better user experience, with clear and up to date information about the scheme on gov.uk.<\/p>\n<p>Users can still visit the webpage to find out if they are eligible under the scheme and whether their area is open for new applications. Those eligible can then contact suppliers delivering voucher projects in their area.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The department also noted that there are relatively few areas open for new voucher applications, and that previous research had showed searches using the old eligibility checker would be low.
