{"id":3749,"date":"2013-07-17T12:14:02","date_gmt":"2013-07-17T11:14:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=3749"},"modified":"2013-07-17T12:18:15","modified_gmt":"2013-07-17T11:18:15","slug":"uk-wireless-broadband-operators-gain-indefinite-28ghz-licenses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/07\/uk-wireless-broadband-operators-gain-indefinite-28ghz-licenses.html","title":{"rendered":"UK Wireless Broadband Operators Gain Indefinite 28GHz Licences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> has announced that Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (BFWA) ISPs that make use of the 28GHz radio spectrum band, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanwimax.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Urban Wimax<\/a> and Cable &amp; Wireless UK, will now be able to keep the licence &#8220;<em>indefinitely<\/em>&#8221; (i.e. they were due to expire on 31st December 2015) but there will be a cost.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s understood that related ISPs will also, from <strong>January 2016<\/strong>, be subject to &#8220;<em>administered incentive pricing per geographic region<\/em>&#8220;. The rate for this has yet to be set and will be decided as part of the regulators on-going review into fixed link bands.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Ofcoms Statement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>We have considered carefully the responses received and have concluded, in light of our duties and for the reasons set out in this Statement, that it is appropriate to vary the licences held by Urban Wimax Limited and Cable &amp; Wireless UK by extending them so that they become of indefinite duration.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We consider that this variation will provide licence holders with clarity of spectrum tenure\/use beyond 2015 and should remove the main obstacle to investment, development and use of the spectrum in the meantime.
