{"id":38421,"date":"2024-06-19T09:33:52","date_gmt":"2024-06-19T08:33:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=38421"},"modified":"2024-06-19T09:33:52","modified_gmt":"2024-06-19T08:33:52","slug":"ofcom-to-revoke-all-licences-for-unpaired-2100mhz-uk-mobile-band-by-2029","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/06\/ofcom-to-revoke-all-licences-for-unpaired-2100mhz-uk-mobile-band-by-2029.html","title":{"rendered":"Ofcom to Revoke All Licences for Unpaired 2100MHz UK Mobile Band by 2029"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> has just confirmed that they will revoke the current mobile operator licences \u2013 held by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>) \u2013 for the unpaired part of the 2100MHz band (1899.9 &#8211; 1920MHz) by 3rd April 2029, which was originally auctioned off in April 2000 to support the rollout of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> mobile (mobile broadband) networks.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>All four of the major mobile network operators (inc. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a>) already make use of <em>paired<\/em> radio spectrum in the <strong>2100MHz<\/strong> band (see below). But today&#8217;s update on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s plan from last year concerns the smaller 20MHz frequency slice of <em>unpaired<\/em> spectrum in that same band.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> were originally going to use this spectrum for their ESN Gateway, but that may now end up needing an alternative &#8211; subject to consultation.<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" style=\"padding: 0px; width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2021-uk-internet-statistics\/2100MHz_Spectrum_Holdings_UK_July_2021.png\" alt=\"2100MHz_Spectrum_Holdings_UK_July_2021\"><\/p>\n<p>The unpaired part is currently largely unused and the operators don&#8217;t have any plans to deploy higher-power services in the spectrum, which is largely due to the lack of a supportive ecosystem, as well as the need for a guard band against paired spectrum (used to reduce the risk of interference) and the limited bandwidth it offers.
