{"id":3851,"date":"2013-07-30T19:47:51","date_gmt":"2013-07-30T18:47:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=3851"},"modified":"2013-07-31T07:01:47","modified_gmt":"2013-07-31T06:01:47","slug":"arqiva-map-confirms-first-uk-areas-to-benefit-from-150m-mobile-upgrade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/07\/arqiva-map-confirms-first-uk-areas-to-benefit-from-150m-mobile-upgrade.html","title":{"rendered":"Arqiva Map Confirms First UK Areas to Benefit from \u00a3150m Mobile Upgrade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.arqiva.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Arqiva<\/a> has revealed a map of the first areas to benefit from the government&#8217;s \u00a3150m <em>Mobile Infrastructure Project<\/em> (MIP), which was established as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> auction (800MHz and 2.6GHz) process to help build new mobile masts for those who live in areas of poor or non-existent mobile coverage.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Overall around <strong>60,000 premises<\/strong> and sections of road will benefit from the new infrastructure and this will contribute towards ensuring that Mobile Broadband (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a>) services become available to \u201c<em>at least<\/em>\u201d 98% of UK people by the end of 2015 (the original target was 2017 but mobile operators now expect to beat that by two years).<\/p>\n<p>The first sites to benefit are due to \u201c<em>go live<\/em>\u201d by the <strong>end of 2013<\/strong> and these will include locations in Cornwall, Northumberland, Strabane, Aberdeenshire and Powys.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Communications Minister, Ed Vaizey, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>This project will see mobile phone coverage extended to many of the people who currently live and work in areas where there is none. The project will provide a significant boost to local economies across the UK, and will be instrumental in helping Britain win the global race<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The four primary <strong>Mobile Network Operators<\/strong> (MNO), including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a>, will all be providing coverage from the sites and funding their operating costs for the <strong>20 year life of the project<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However it&#8217;s worth remembering that the MIP has been significantly scaled back from its original goal. Under the old plans the project would have worked to help \u201c<em>[the] 5 to 10% of consumers and businesses that live and work in areas of the UK where existing mobile coverage is poor or non-existent<\/em>\u201d;\u00a0<strong>900,000 premises<\/strong> currently lack full mobile coverage.<\/p>\n<p>As it stands now Arqiva claims to have &#8220;<em>begun identifying suitable sites in a phased manner<\/em>&#8221; and the map below shows the local authority areas that stand to benefit from MIP investment.
