Mobile signals now reach 92% of the county (up from 89%) and mobile broadband speeds improved by 10%.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The idea of using bin collections to map <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> mobile coverage is one that has only recently started to become popular (examples <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/07\/streetwave-maps-mobile-network-speeds-in-caerphilly-using-bin-lorries.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/06\/rubbish-trucks-to-help-map-4g-mobile-coverage-in-mid-wales.html\">here<\/a>). In this setup, bin collection vehicles are installed with four off-the-shelf smartphones using software from <a href=\"https:\/\/streetwave.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Streetwave<\/a> on top, which run continuous tests of signal coverage and network performance (once every 20 metres in rural areas and 5m in urban areas) as the vehicles go about their routes.<\/p>\n<p>The mapping data this produces is typically much more accurate than the flaky estimates of mobile coverage that are so often produced by network operators and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>. The NCC are now using this data to help investigate options, such as <strong>small cells<\/strong>, for plugging some of the highly localised coverage gaps that have been revealed.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Councillor Wojciech Ploszaj said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s very rural. Something like 95% of the population lives in about 5% of Northumberland. We\u2019ve got places where there is no mobile connectivity and very, very limited broadband as well.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As for Streetwave, the company has already conducted similar bin lorry-based surveys in 30 local authority areas during 2024 (many of these are ongoing) and they&#8217;re now in discussions with another 50 councils. \u201c<em>It\u2019s not a one-and-done hobbyist project. We\u2019re on the path to mapping the whole country<\/em>\u201d, said George Gibson, one of Streetwave\u2019s co-founders.<\/p>\n<p>However, we should point out that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> doesn&#8217;t specifically say what the figure of 92% actually represents (i.e. is it 2G or 2G+<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a>+<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\">5G<\/a> etc.), and their report naturally excludes similar data for other operators like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Northumberland County Council (NCC) in Northern England and mobile operator Vodafone UK have revealed that, thanks to the aid of bin lorries, they&#8217;ve been able to confirm that their network coverage improved in the county after 3G was retired in February 2024.
