{"id":39143,"date":"2024-08-26T16:14:46","date_gmt":"2024-08-26T15:14:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=39143"},"modified":"2024-08-26T16:14:46","modified_gmt":"2024-08-26T15:14:46","slug":"16-new-uk-publicly-funded-4g-mobile-mast-upgrades-now-live","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/08\/16-new-uk-publicly-funded-4g-mobile-mast-upgrades-now-live.html","title":{"rendered":"16 New UK Publicly Funded 4G Mobile Mast Upgrades Now Live"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The next batch of four government-funded rural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have gone live in some of Britain\u2019s most visited national parks, which forms part of the industry-led \u00a31bn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/03\/operators-sign-1bn-deal-for-95-geographic-uk-4g-cover-by-2026.html\">Shared Rural Network<\/a> (SRN) project with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The SRN \u2013 supported by <strong>\u00a3501m<\/strong> of public funding and <strong>\u00a3532m<\/strong> from operators \u2013 involves both the reciprocal sharing of existing masts in certain areas and the demand-led building and sharing of new masts in others between the operators (MNO). The target is to extend geographic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> coverage (aggregate) to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025, which falls to 84% when only considering the areas where you\u2019ll be able to take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> from all providers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> The target varies between regions, thus 4G cover from at least one operator is expected to reach 98% in England, 91% in Scotland, 95% in Wales and 98% in N.Ireland. But this falls to 90% in England, 74% in Scotland, 80% in Wales and 85% in N.Ireland when looking at coverage from all MNOs combined.<\/div>\n<p>Most of the early work on the SRN has typically involved private investment from the main mobile network operators, although over the past year we\u2019ve also seen government-funded mast upgrades taking place in other parts of the UK (examples <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/05\/first-of-120-planned-uk-gov-funded-4g-mast-upgrades-goes-live-in-scotland.html\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/03\/first-of-86-uk-gov-funded-4g-mobile-mast-upgrades-go-live-in-wales.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/04\/first-of-83-new-uk-gov-funded-4g-mast-upgrades-goes-live-in-england.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The latest 4 sites to be upgraded today include areas of outstanding natural beauty across England and Wales, such as Snowdonia, the Shropshire Hills, the Wye Valley, and the Brecon Beacons. This element of the SRN sees the government (DSIT) providing a total of \u00a3184m from the \u00a3500m public SRN funding to the Home Office and mobile network operators to help upgrade <strong>Extended Area Service<\/strong> (EAS) masts being built as part of the 4G <strong>Emergency Services Network<\/strong> (ESN), which helps to eliminate total not-spot areas.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Chris Bryant, Minister of State for Telecoms, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want everyone to be able to enjoy the breath-taking views of our mountains, parks, and lakes and this connectivity boost without any impact on scenery will give visitors the peace of mind to be able to call a friend should they get lost, or find their way to enjoy a much-needed lunch break in a local pub.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So far a total of 16 EAS mast upgrades have been switched on \u2013 including 13 in Wales, 1 in Scotland and 2 in England. Overall, the SRN has already led to an additional 14,800 square kilometres \u2013 an area roughly the size of Northern Ireland or two million football pitches \u2013 receiving 4G coverage from all four operators. The government and the UK\u2019s four mobile network operators ultimately aim to provide coverage to an additional 280,000 premises and 16,000km of the UK\u2019s roads.<\/p>\n<p>The SRN includes two key targets. The first involves the delivery of industry funded coverage improvements in <strong>Partial Not-Spot<\/strong> (PNS) areas (i.e. areas that receive coverage from at least one operator, but not all), which needed to be achieved by June 2024 \u2013 at this point 4G (mobile broadband) must cover 88% of the UK\u2019s landmass (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> all claim to have achieved this, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> appear to be lagging behind).<\/p>\n<p>The second target involves <strong>Total Not-Spot<\/strong> (TNS) areas by early 2027. Just to be clear, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>\u2019s licence obligations commit each individual operator to increase its 4G coverage to 88% of the UK\u2019s landmass by June 2024 \u2013 rising to 90% by January 2027 \u2013 with these individual obligations supporting the overall target of 95% by December 2025.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> are currently reviewing the progress of the SRN scheme, which follows some earlier criticism of the programme by both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nao.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Audit Office<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/02\/nao-warn-gbp1bn-uk-rural-4g-mobile-rollout-is-facing-delays.html\">here<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/committee\/127\/public-accounts-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Accounts Committee<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/pac-warn-pace-of-rural-uk-4g-mobile-rollout-project-is-unsustainable.html\">here<\/a>).
