{"id":39432,"date":"2024-09-18T11:20:11","date_gmt":"2024-09-18T10:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=39432"},"modified":"2024-09-18T11:20:11","modified_gmt":"2024-09-18T10:20:11","slug":"ceo-of-freedom-fibre-elected-as-honorary-fellow-at-the-royal-academy-of-engineering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/09\/ceo-of-freedom-fibre-elected-as-honorary-fellow-at-the-royal-academy-of-engineering.html","title":{"rendered":"CEO of Freedom Fibre Elected as Honorary Fellow at the Royal Academy of Engineering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The CEO and Co-Founder of alternative UK full fibre broadband operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomfibre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Freedom Fibre<\/a>, Neil McArthur, has just become one of 71 leading figures in the engineering and technology fields to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Following its AGM on 17th September 2024, the Royal Academy of Engineering announced the group consisting of 60 Fellows, 6 International Fellows and 5 Honorary Fellows, each of whom has made exceptional contributions to their own sector, pioneering new innovations, leading progress in business or academia, providing high level advice to government, or promoting wider understanding of engineering and technology.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bq2\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> FF was originally backed by \u00a3111m from <strong>Equitix<\/strong> and is working to cover parts of Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Shropshire in England and North Wales. The operator previously aspired to cover 2 million UK premises and also holds the state aid supported \u00a324m Project Gigabit contract to cover 12,000 premises in rural parts of Shropshire (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2023\/05\/freedom-fibre-win-rural-shropshire-gigabit-broadband-rollout-contract.html\">here<\/a>), as well as the \u00a343m contract to reach 15,000 in Cheshire (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/freedom-fibre-win-rural-cheshire-uk-gigabit-broadband-rollout-contract.html\">here<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p>Just to recap. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/freedomfibre\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Freedom Fibre<\/a>&#8217;s new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> \/ XGS-PON) broadband network currently covers over 300,000 premises across England and is home to 20,000 customers. The wholesale network is typically available via a number of retail ISPs, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a>, Yayzi, Home Telecom, Lila Connect and many more.<\/p>\n<p>Neil himself is an industry veteran that first joined telecoms in the mid 90s when deregulation happened, setting up a business ISP called Opal Telecoms. That business ultimately merged with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/cpw\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Carphone Warehouse<\/a> in 2002 and helped to form the foundations for a much more familiar consumer and business provider \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Neil then ran the technology side of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a> for 8 years and was a non-exec for quite a few years before returning to run Fibre Nation, a direct trenching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttp\">FTTP<\/a> venture based in York that was also linked to TalkTalk. In case anybody has forgotten, the Fibre Nation project was sold to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/cityfibre\" target=\"_blank\">CityFibre<\/a> for \u00a3200m in 2020 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/01\/cityfibre-buy-fibrenation-and-set-8-million-uk-ftth-homes-goal.html\">here<\/a>) and at that point Neil decided to stay in the business of building digital infrastructure by establishing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/freedomfibre\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Freedom Fibre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Neil McArthur, MBE FREng, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am honoured to have been elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
