{"id":3993,"date":"2013-08-19T01:37:00","date_gmt":"2013-08-19T00:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=3993"},"modified":"2013-08-19T06:47:17","modified_gmt":"2013-08-19T05:47:17","slug":"bt-make-final-adjustments-for-faster-fttc-broadband-vectoring-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/08\/bt-make-final-adjustments-for-faster-fttc-broadband-vectoring-trial.html","title":{"rendered":"BT Make Final Adjustments for Faster FTTC Broadband Vectoring Trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BTOpenreach has advised ISPreview.co.uk that their first trial of VDSL Vectoring (<em>ITU-T G.993.5<\/em>) technology, which could make even faster speeds available to more people on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s superfast (&#8216;up to&#8217; 80Mbps) hybrid-fibre (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>) broadband network, has been delayed a little but should now begin &#8220;<em>within the next few weeks<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The trial was originally due to get underway by the end of July or early August 2013 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2013\/06\/bt-prep-uk-superfast-broadband-fttc-vectoring-trial-for-late-july.html\" target=\"_blank\">full trial details<\/a>) but the initial preparations have apparently taken slightly longer than expected. The good news is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> have now finished installing the necessary <strong>DSLAM<\/strong> hardware into six street cabinets around <strong>Barnet<\/strong> (London) and <strong>Braintree<\/strong> (Essex) in England.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>A Spokesperson for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> told ISPreview.co.uk:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>We&#8217;re now making a number of final adjustments and running some further diagnostics to ensure customers on the trial continue to receive a good service before enabling the system. We expect this final work to be complete within the next few weeks<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>VDSL Vectoring is not unlike the <strong>noise cancellation technology<\/strong> that you often find in some headphones and works to cancel out <strong>crosstalk<\/strong> (interference) on the \u201c<em>last mile<\/em>\u201d run of copper cable (i.e. between your local street cabinet and home), which could result in a noticeable speed boost.<\/p>\n<p>Some have speculated that Vectoring could push <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> service<strong> beyond 100Mbps<\/strong> and, with the help of a few other tweaks, possibly as high as up to 200Mbps. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s initial focus will not be on raising the headline rate and they instead envisage it being used to improve existing performance to more users; especially for those on longer lines where interference is a big problem.<\/p>\n<p>But in order to work effectively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/openreach\" target=\"_blank\">Openreach<\/a> has to enable it on all of the lines that go into a street cabinet, which takes a little longer to deploy. Vectoring might also cause problems for <strong>Sub Loop Unbundled<\/strong> (SLU) providers, which could be using incompatible hardware and systems that would make Vectoring difficult to deploy in some areas. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> are investigating this issue as part of their market reviews. On top of that the upgrade also attracts a moderate cost.<\/p>\n<p>In any case the initial trial, once it finally gets underway, is expected to run through September and probably most of November too.
